Acting Techniques for Industrial Films from a Professional Actor
Like all forms of acting, industrial films require a specific technique that is not the most advanced, but must be taken seriously in order to excel at the job.
Industrial films provide an excellent opportunity for actors to stretch their legs and gain real-set experience. If you are not familiar, industrial films are used in organizations and corporate companies as an internal training and informational tool. These videos are never seen outside of a particular company, and while they are not the most glamorous, they offer good paychecks and an opportunity to add a credit to your resume.
Like all forms of acting, industrial films require a specific technique that is not the most advanced, but must be taken seriously in order to excel at the job.
Within this article, I have outlined the best acting tips for industrial films with the goal of answering questions and guiding young actors within this acting venue.
The Style
Industrial films are notorious for being a little on the boring side. Typically, as an actor in an industrial film you will be explaining company procedures, giving examples of customer/client interactions and updating the company employees on new policies. Sounds thrilling, right? Well, yes, if you know how to play it off.
The last thing you want to do in an industrial film production is to talk in a boring, monotone manner. Be excited, be professional and have true conviction in the words you're saying. While you may be playing an upset customer or simply reading off the new company policies when it comes to toilet paper use, speak clearly, use your emotions and treat this job as any other acting performance.
Don't be Hokey
Alright, now this is a major point. I have personally seen far too may industrial films where the actors were just plain awful. Their lines held no conviction, articulation was not on their word-of-the-day calendar and the entire performance was hokey.
It is easy to feel that industrial films do not require your best work; however, treat this acting job as any other. Perform character study, engage your entire mind and body within the script and give every line weight and conviction - even if you're talking about something that is utterly boring.
