How to Remove a Top Kitchen Cabinet for Reuse in the Garage

Easy instructions for removing the upper cabinets from your old kitchen so they can be reused for garage storage.

Those free hanging upper kitchen cabinets are easy to remove from the walls of your kitchen for reuse in the garage. Here's how it's done:

Tools needed: How to remove those old kitchen cabinets depends on how they were originally installed. Very old kitchen cabinets were often backless, and attached to the wall by means of a "cleat". The cleat is a strip of wood found along the inside back wall of the cabinet along the very top. Cabinets installed with a cleat will need to be removed with a flat tip pry bar (known as a wonderbar), square putty knife, and a mallet.

Newer kitchen cabinets tend to come with a back which was screwed directly into the wall. To remove the screws, a power drill with a phillips screw head attachment will be needed.

Additional tools include a hammer and safety goggles.

Removing the cabinets: Cabinets that were attached to the wall by means of screws can be removed by simply backing out the screws. Be sure to have a helper supporting the cabinet so it doesn't come crashing to the floor.

If your old kitchen cabinets were installed with a cleat, the task is a several step process:
1. Locate the trim in from of the cabinet unit. The trim might be as simple as quarter round, or an elaborately scrolled moulding or cove moulding. Press the tip of the putty knife beneath the trim then tap gently with the mallet to separate the trim from the ceiling. Once there's a bit of space, the pry bar can be used to carefully pull the trim off the wall.
2. Using the short end of the pry bar, carefully back off the cleat inside the cabinet. Have a helper standing by to grab the cabinet as it drops.
3. If the cabinet doesn't drop, there may be nails in the top of the cabinet where it was attached to the ceiling. Use the putty knife and mallet to create a small space between the top of the cabinet and the ceiling, then switch to the pry bar.

By working slowly and following these instructions, your old kitchen cabinets can be removed with negligible damage and recycled into a practical storage solution for the garage.
