Horse Health: Signs of Dehydration

Dehydration can be deadly in horses but it can be treated if caught in time. Signs include extreme lathery sweat, a change in attitude and mild fever.

Skin Conditions

After exercising in extreme heat, horses work up a thick lather of sweat. But even a sick horse or pony can start sweating and thus lose precious bodily fluids. In any suspected case of dehydration, a painless and quick skin test can be done.

Pinch a small area of skin on the horse's neck, pull and watch how long it takes for the skin to settle back into position. A healthy horse's skin will snap back immediately. But a dehydrated horse's skin may stick up like a teepee before slowly settling back down.

Capillary Refill Test

Another test can be done by pressing a finer against a horse's gums. When the finger is removed, a pale mark is seen. In a healthy horse, the color returns to normal pink in less than two seconds. But in a dehydrated horse, the white will still remain white. The gums may be a darker pink or even red, but this does not happen to all dehydrated horses.

The gums and the tongue also may feel dry in severe cases of dehydration.

Vital Signs

Dehydrated horses tend to have a much faster heartbeat than usual, but this does not happen to all horses with dehydration. The breathing also may vary from heavy panting to quick, shallow breaths. In severe cases, horses will begin to tremble or have uncontrollable muscle spasms and in the worst cases will go into seizures. Dehydrated horses also tend to have a fever of over 102 degrees F.

Attitude

The horse's character will shift dramatically. The dehydrated horse will be lethargic and does not respond to situations that usually excite the horse, such as rattling a food bucket or even a car backfiring. Look the horse in the eye and the horse will not seem to be aware that you are looking at him or her. The eyes may also seem sunken into the sockets, according to Marcy Pavord and Tony Pavord, BVSc, MRCVS.
