My Interview with Wisconsin Surfer & 'Green' Business Entrepreneur, Lance Athearn

Brothers Lance Athearn and Jesse Kaftanski have made a name for themselves by combining three of their passions: surfing, craftsmanship and love for the environment.

Background
Lance, and his brother Jesse Kaftanski, own Walk On Water Surfboards (W.O.W.) and they run the business from their "Man Cave" in the garage. When asked how he got into surfing in the first place, Lance tells a very ironic story. "We caught the surfing bug from our Pops, (Jan Paul Kaftanski), who while in the Coast Guard stationed in Key West in radar/sonar school in the 60's caught the bug on a Velzy surfboard. He took it up the coast to Maine, while stationed there, and rode some North Atlantic waves. Strangely enough, my brother and I didn't start surfing until we later moved to Wisconsin." As for the business? Lance says "In 2020, Jessie and I wanted to make a surfboard as a gift for our Pa. While it was under construction, we made some more space in the garage and each of us built one to call our own as well. Such a passion grew while we were building these boards, we thought 'If we could only do this for a living...' and as soon as the three boards were finished my brother and I, of course, took them to the water. Every time we were out, whether surfing or Stand Up Paddling, 6 out of 10 people would stop us to ask questions like, 'Where did you get that?', 'Where do I get one?' and 'You built that?' Others would watch us from a distance and once on land, someone came up to us and said 'It looked like you were walking on the water!' We decided then and there that we should start up a business." And they did. 'Walk on Water Surfboards' (LLC) was official as of March 2020.

Surfing in the Mid-west
Now, the company's logo, featuring a cow catching some waves, became an instant classic here in dairyland. But, being raised in the Midwest myself, I couldn't help but wonder how many waves could people possibly catch around here? Lance's answer surprised me. "People have been surfing the Great Lakes since the 50's and possibly even earlier. In fact, Wisconsin native Tom Blake had patented the first production surfboard/paddleboard in 1929 of an all wood, hollow construction design." (Which later became the inspiration for Lance and Jesse's first board that they had made for a gift for their father.) Lance goes on to explain "Surfing is all about the 'stoke', not the location. The surfers on the Great Lakes love to surf and feel 'the stoke' just as much as any ocean surfer. There are countless surf breaks on all five of the Great Lakes. Our local 'break' is in Sheboygan, WI- which has been dubbed the Malibu of the Mid-West."

Great Lakes Surf Season
The Great Lakes surf season starts Labor Day Weekend and is kicked off annually with the largest freshwater surfing event in the world, 'The Dairyland Surf Classic'. The event which is hosted by twin brothers and Larry 'Longboard' and Lee 'the Waterflea' Williams, along with fellow Sheboygan native Lester Priday, brings surfers from all over the world. The 'Madpolecats', which is the brother's family band, has been headlining the awards ceremony/banquet for the past 4 yrs. Lance says that "Great Lake Surfers always keep their eyes on the weather for those freak summer swells! When the water is flat, we Stand Up Paddle... Surf season on the Great Lakes generally runs from Labor Day to Memorial Day. Cold water? Yes, but no sharks!"

Winter Months
So, what do these surf brothers do during the frozen winter months? Lance simply says "Besides taking advantage of family time, we build our boards and paddles." They are also working on spreading the message of what the sport can do for you physically, as well as mentally. The company's homepage on it's website states that 'Walk On Water has been formed with the goal in mind to offer a product that is geared towards physical and mental health. Whether you are surfing, stand up paddling, or prone paddling, these activities provide a variety of low impact physical exercises' including 'Core Strength, Cardio, Arms amp; Shoulders, Back amp; Legs and Balance...As for the mental health aspect, getting in or on the water has the ability to clear your mind of the everyday stresses of life.' When asked about if everyone could learn how to surf or SUP, Lance replies, "Anyone can learn to surf, or stand up paddle which is growing in popularity and is comparable to standing up in a canoe and paddling. Other than balance (which can be developed), and the ability to swim (life jackets are recommended) there are no special skills needed." If you are still worried about the balance part, as I know I am, Lance goes on to say that "Prone paddling (lying on the board flat on your stomach and paddling with your arms) and even wake surfing behind a boat or jet-ski will get your feet wet." He goes on to say that "Most people still get that 'tilted head of a confused dog' look on their face when we mention our business, but since the making of such great surf films as 'Unsalted' by Vince Deur and 'Step into Liquid' by Dana Brown (whose father Bruce Brown created 'The Endless Summer'), surfing in the Great Lakes is becoming more and more popular."

It Ain't Fast Being Handcrafted amp; Green
I ended my interview with Lance Athearn by asking him what was next for Walk On Water Surfboards. He replied "Jesse and I will keep doing our part to preserve the environment and local economy by building our boards out of recycled and reclaimed wood. We only use wood from trees that are grown and harvested in the area. We are working with construction and carpentry contractors and area farmers to reclaim their unused and scrap lumber, so it doesn't end up in the landfills... Since every board is handmade and customized to order, the process originally took us about 100+ hrs. per board but we've since cut that time in half. We now use a CAD design program, which enables us to design a board for any style of surfer, SUP'er and their location, freshwater or ocean... We are a small start-up business with 'big' business dreams and hope to have a board in every state in the U.S. and on every coast in the world... someday."

For more information about W.O.W. and it's owners, their handmade Green products or how to get one of their popular fashion trend setting t-shirts featuring the famous cow on surfboard logo; you can contact either brother through their website at Walk On Water Surfboards. You can also surf over to their fan pages at Facebook or Myspace to connect with others, locally and nationally, that love walkin' on water.
