Writing for Beginners: An Easier Way of Writing Essays and Editorials
Writing about personal opinion can be somewhat difficult if you don't have a good tool set to lay them down. Here's a few tips to make life a little easier.
By now, hopefully you've developed a pretty good skill set with outlining and fleshing out your ideas. I mention outlining because writing editorials and essays rely heavily on being able to place your ideas clearly and concisely in the specified format. Editorials and essays are a different beast from fiction, because you have to show your guns in the form of research and eloquence. As such, they can be a bit difficult but overall the desired effect isn't hard to accomplish.
Outline, Outline, and Outline
After you've come to your idea or opinion, it's best to outline your essay or editorial into basic components. You'll want to lay out your thesis, that being the idea you're going to develop throughout the narrative, and you'll want to lay out the supporting bits that enable you to express this opinion. When outlining the various components of your essay or editorial, you want to have a few key points you wish to touch upon. Instead of relying on filler, or fluff as I like to call it, you want to strip away your thoughts to the barest of essentials. It'll be a no-frills approach to your opinion, and if it's got even the slightest bit of fluff you need to shave it off. After all, a fluffy piece is no good, it's the exact opposite of a cute puppy.
Writing the First Draft
Much like a piece of fiction, you have to draft out your piece of non-fiction. Standard rules apply, and be cautious that you don't insert more than you have to. What makes a good editorial or essay is one part fact, one part anecdote, and one part thorough research. If you're writing a piece, be sure to insert a few quotations supporting your viewpoint, taking care to make sure the source is carefully cited. If there's a bigger insult to a writer than being told your work isn't any good, it's going without the credit you so richly deserve. After you lay down your thoughts, it's time to edit.
Editing
The first draft may have grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. We all make mistakes after all, it's only natural that some of them may come out in your writing. You'll hone it down to a science in due time, so it's best to focus in on making your edits for the time being. Polish out the errors and rewrite as needed.
Second Draft and Beyond
Your subsequent drafts should focus in on the flow of the piece, with edits as necessary to rid yourself of awkwardly phrased sentences and passages. By trimming the fat off your piece, you get something lean, which is best. By making your piece a lean mean fighting machine, you make it a lot easier to read and thus your opinion comes across a little clearer.
Practice
Feel free to write a few essays expressing your viewpoints. They can relate to the flaws inherent in the burger market or anything else. Make sure when writing to have an outside opinion so you can grasp your growth and movements forward. Most importantly, take care to get a good grip on citations and writing concisely. You have to use your space effectively. People don't respond to white space and people really don't respond to an overcrowded mess. So, it's up to you, my fledgling grasshopper to strike the balance. Best of luck, and keep on writing!
