How to Get Family Practice Board Certification
The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) provides certification for doctors who have their degrees, complete a family-practice residency and pass the MC-FP exam. Students should learn the process of certification and plan accordingly.
First, all applicants must obtain their medical degrees. The ABFM allows both M.D. and D.O. medical degrees for this qualification.
The required Family Medicine residency length is 3 years. The residency program must also be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. However, some applicants with foreign medical degrees or residency may qualify. See the application for further details on the extra requirements for foreign applicants.
During the residency period is usually when applicants submit their applications to the ABFM family practice board to take the certification exam. There is also an In-Training Examination that can be taken during the residency to help family-medicine trainees track their progress. Residents should ask their residency heads to schedule them for this family-practice board certification practice test.
In fact, the outline is the same as for the standard MC-FP exam (Maintenance of Certification-Family Practice). Note that even initial examinees take this test even though it uses the word "Maintenance."
To view the content outline, go to the "In-Training Examination" page. You will see a link to the outline at the top of the page, as of the time of this writing. You will also see a link to download ITE books. You may or may not already have access to these. But they should help you prepare for the family-practice in-training test plus the real family medicine board certification exam since the subjects are identical.
Download the ABFM Certification Candidate Information Booklet to learn more about how, where, and when to apply and take the exam. The booklet is essentially devoid of any exam tips or family practice board certification test reference materials. However, the ABFM does provide an "Exam Preparation" page on its website. Go through the videos to get ideas about how to study for this family-medicine certification test.
Finally, speak to your residency supervisors and fellow students about how they prepared or are getting ready for the exam. They may be able to point you to specific materials that will prepare you for this difficult test.
