Alternative Medicine - Chiropractic Care

The alternative medicine of chiropractic care is the second largest primary health care field in the world. This holistic therapy could be right for you.

There are records of chiropractic care being used by ancient civilizations. The Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, Indians, and American and South American natives all practiced manipulation. During the Middle Ages massage was added to manipulation. Even with this past history chiropractic care has only become more widely accepted in the last twenty years.

The modern day system of chiropractic began in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer. He named his practice from the Greek words "chiro" (hands) and praktikos, which means "done by hand." Today's doctors of chiropractic have educational requirements much like those of medical doctors. These requirements are set by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE).

A chiropractor uses manipulation to make adjustments of the spine and other joints. Care is centered around the function of the body's spinal column and connecting muscles and nerves. The relationship between bones, joints, nerves, and muscles are all considered in this alternative medicine. Followers believe in the body's ability to self-heal. It is a holistic therapy that looks at the total health of a person.

It is important to feel comfortable and confident in the doctor of chiropractic that you choose. Relaxation makes the experience easier. Here are a few things to consider before choosing a chiropractic doctor:

Gather referrals from family and friends. Often they will know of a reputable doctor in your area.

Find out if your insurance covers chiropractic care.

Ask for the doctor's credentials and information about his practice.

Ask the doctor what method or "school" of chiropractic care he uses on his patients. The traditional approach or "school" is called "straight chiropractic," which is spinal and joint manipulation alone. The second approach, "mixing chiropractic," combines manipulation with modern medicine.

Chiropractic care is the second largest primary health care field in the world. This alternative medicine is not a conventional medicine, but it is an excellent choice for many people. If you have a health issue that has not been cared for with traditional medical treatment you should try the alternative medicine of chiropractic care. Chiropractic care is a good alternative to medical doctors if you desire non-invasive, drug-free care.
