Happiness is so important because it is vital to achieving our life goals. We all have the potential to make positive changes in our lives and become happy individuals. This year is the perfect time to take the steps to finding happiness.

Below are 10 simple happiness tips to making 2020 the greatest year:

Attitude of Gratitude: Make 2020 the year of an attitude of gratitude. Look at the important things in your life with great appreciation. When you are more grateful, you will become more aware of the wonderful things you already have in your life. For instance, when you are grateful for such things as your family and your health, you will start to feel an over all sense of internal happiness. You will start to feel a shift from a negative attitude to a more positive attitude. Stop obsessing about what you don't have and focus of the good things you have in your life.

Self-Love and Love Others: To be happy, you need to love yourself. Only when you love yourself will you be able to express your love for others. Look internally at who you are and what good things you have to offer. Understand that you have value and how you treat yourself will reflect in how you treat others. List all of your good qualities such as: kindness, caring, compassionate, willing to help others, trustworthy...etc. Self-awareness is the first step to positive change.

Be Kind and Help Others: Helping others is not only personally rewarding, but it will help you put your own problems and worries into a clearer perspective. Although you will be making others happy when you help them, you will also be making yourself happy. You will see an increase in self-esteem, self-confidence, sense of control over your life, and improved mental and emotional health. These aspects are all essential to achieving happiness.

Exercise: Although exercise is good for the body, it is also good for your mood. When you exercise, you will get a natural high as natural endorphins are released. As well, as you start to improve yourself physically, your self-confidence and self-esteem will improve. You don't have to jump right into rigorous exercise. You can start off by taking a walk with your dog or go for a bike ride. Once you start moving, you will start to feel your mood improve.

Eat Healthy: The phrase, 'you are what you eat' is really true. If you eat healthy you will feel good physically and mentally. Foods rich in healthy protein, vitamins, and minerals are essential to making you feel and look good. Stay away from the high sugar foods and unhealthy fats as they will make you feel physically and mentally drained.

Smile: There is a phrase that says, "A happy face leads to good health." Happiness is produced on the inside and then projected to the outside. When you smile, you are projecting positive energy. It is important to do things that make you smile as well as laugh. People will respond in kind and soon you will be benefiting from their positive energy.

Pray and Meditate: Happy people often report that they have a positive connection to a higher power and their own internal selves. Praying and meditating are productive ways to tap into their spiritual side. It helps people focus their energy on positive spiritual explorations that results in a sense of internal peace and contentment. As well, it provides a sense of life's meaning and a reason to focus beyond yourself.

Eliminate Unhealthy Relationships: People who have a positive support system tend to be physically and emotionally healthier. It is important to eliminate unhealthy relationships that are having a negative effect such as people who are abusive physically, emotionally, and verbally. People who constantly criticize and tell you that you cannot achieve your goals are major road blocks to your happiness. You deserve a positive support system with people who care and want the best for you.

Forgiveness: Forgive yourself and forgive others - break your silence. When you forgive yourself and others, you will feel a great burden lift from your shoulders. You will no longer be carrying the guilt, pain, and anger that have been preventing you from moving forward and finding happiness. The act of forgiveness is an act of self-love. Once the burden is lifted, you will start seeing the world in a better light.

Develop a Debt Free Plan: Overwhelming debt is a major cause of unhappiness. Develop a plan to get out of debt. Working with a credit counselor will help you develop a realistic and achievable plan to become debt-free.
