Boomers, Tumors, and Fumers: Three Contributors to Bad Golf Practice
Adding a disciplined plan and established drills to golf practice is critical for game improvement. Bad practice sessions only lead to continued mediocrity or indeed decline. Don't fall into one of the following groups of offenders.
When I visit the driving range I'm there with a plan in mind, whether it's hitting mostly wedge shots to focus on a smooth tempo and then replicating it with my driver, working a particular ball flight, or repeating a drill designed to maintain my spine angle. Regardless what it may be, I'm putting structure to my practice. On some days I find my attention diverted to others around me, spending as much time watching and listening to them as I am on my own session. Over the years of observation I've categorized bad practice into three distinct groups of people: boomers, tumors, and fumers. Let me elaborate.
Boomers: We've all seen them, the guys who reach into their bag for the driver before they've found an empty basket to fill up with balls. They swing at that opening shot like a lumberjack hacking at an oak tree, eventually spraying ball after ball across every inch of the range, determined at some point to clear the fifty foot netting at the back of the property. It's all about power with these guys, and don't get me wrong, when they're lucky enough to land a square clubface on the back of the ball, it goes a long way, but transfer this type of practice to the course and they spend half the round chipping sideways from the trees or requiring a scuba suit to retrieve their ball.
Tumors: These folks are the ones who accompany a friend or family member to the range, masquerading as their coach. Sure, they might shoot better scores than their student for the afternoon, but when I see them "demonstrating" to the eager onlooker it tends to be horrific, often only demonstrating they'd be incapable of swinging the head of a shovel onto an elephant's backside never mind a small club face onto an even smaller ball. Listening to these people is like taking sensitivity lessons from Gordon Ramsey. They're like a tumor, gradually spreading further trouble every time they dish out new advice. Some of my favorites are "keep your head down," or "aim further left'" and even "try hooding the face." The latter two are common when a wicked slice is the culprit. That may result in more fairways hit at times, but is merely a Band-Aid rather than a root-cause countermeasure. These people need to stick to what they know. I'm aware they mean well, but more often than not they're inflicting more damage than benefit.
Fumers: Without doubt these are the most comical I've witnessed. I watch in disbelief, biting my bottom lip as they hit one bad shot after another, gradually becoming more and more frustrated; fuming as I call it. You can almost see the steam rising from their ears with every shake of their reddening face. The funniest thing is they persist with the same swing and lightening routine over and over again. Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results . The fumers may argue that it's persistence, an unwillingness to admit defeat, but at the end of the day it's bad practice and counterproductive. Muscle memory does not filter out improper form.
Don't be a boomer, tumor (or listen to one), or fumer. If you can identify with any of the above it's time to make some changes, and if you were thinking about ordering the next "wonder club" from that TV infomercial, don't. Take the money and invest in a lesson or two from a local PGA professional. Research them if you must, but find someone who can help you fix your fundamentals and provide you with a few practice drills and one or two (maximum) swing thoughts for each exercise. Take these to the range and work on the good habits. If all is going well during your session, take a moment, step back and have a quick listen to what's going on around you. I'll bet you chuckle as you spot the boomers, tumors, and fumers. You will they're everywhere.
