Mistakes to Avoid During a Core Workout
A guide to making sure that your core training is safe and effective.
When doing a core workout, you should do everything in your power to tighten all of your abdominal muscles; it is particularly important to make sure you have contracted the deepest layer of abdominal muscles, called transversus abdominis; if you don't your back will sag and you'll risk doing permanent injury to your spine.
The position of your rib cage is an important indicator of whether or not your abdominal muscles are tightened properly; simply draw your ribs in snugly toward your spine and check to see if they flare up and out. If they do, your deep trunk stabilizers aren't active and you need to tighten them up.
When training the back or the abdominal muscles in positions like the plank or a push-up, you should be relying on the strength of your core and not your leg muscles. It's easy to tell if you're cheating because if you're relying on your legs, your butt will stick up in the air. For example, if you're doing a push-up, you should make sure that your rear-end goes no higher than your shoulders. If it does, you aren't relying on core strength to do the exercise.
On an exhale, you should always lift your pelvic floor up and pull in your abdominal muscles toward your spine. The best way to activate deep abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles is to exhale actively as you lift your muscles up and in. Try exaggerating this exhale as you do core exercises to make sure that you are using these muscles.
Training the core of your body is a lot of work, but it is quite beneficial for your overall health. If you don't train properly however, you'll not only fail to get stronger, but you will risk serious injury. If you are unsure of proper form during core workouts, consult a trainer. However, a good rule of thumb should guarantee that you have the proper form: Simply strive to keep your body level; nothing should stick out, or be sunken too far in.
