Doctor Who: Two Impossible Girls

Yes, two impossible girls. How many deals has the Doctor Who universe made? Or is the answer something far more profound?

Meeting Souffle Girl (Impossible Girl #2)

In the 2020 Doctor Who Christmas special, "The Snowmen", we, and the Doctor (Matt Smith), met Clara Oswin Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman) for the second time in 1892 Victorian England. The first time we, and Doctor, met her was in the season 7 (series 7) premier, "Asylum of the Daleks", in some unspecified distant future after mankind achieves space travel. In both stories she died. In both stories she had the same face and the same name, with the common theme of words, "Run you clever boy... and remember."

Wait... Impossible Girl #2?

It's a clever twist imagined by Doctor Who head writer and producer, Steven Moffat. It is not, however, the first time he's done it. This device was used to bring in the character "Gwen Cooper" (Eve Myles) to the Doctor Who spinoff, Torchwood. Gwen originally appeared as "Gwenith" in the Doctor Who season one, episode three installment, "The Unquiet Dead", which took place in 19th century Cardiff. Gwenith was the modest yet heroic maidservant who was mysteriously connected to The Rift, and who, in the end, had to die to save Earth from the aliens who were trying to invade via The Rift.

Now... remember.

The second time we met Gwen was in the series premier of Torchwood, when she hunted down Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and shoved her way into his life, and the lives of everyone in the Torchwood Hub. The same Hub that sat directly on top of The Rift and was tasked with keeping an eye on it. Again the character was played by Eve Myles. The girl with the same name and the same face, who lived two different lives at two different times. Her common theme? Minding The Rift.

Impossible Girl scenario accidental... or intentional?

It's entirely possible that these two Impossible Girls are not connected in any way, shape, or form. It also might be that Moffat remembered the Gwen device, realized that only the absolute most devoted Whovians (Doctor Who fans) had noticed it, and decided it could be bumped up with more emphasis, and turned into the Souffle Girl device. Another possibility presents itself, however.

Does the universe make Impossible People deals?

One of the running gags in "The Snowmen" was the idea that universe doesn't make deals. The Doctor made two deals before he would save the world this time. The first was with Clara when he asked if she would come away with him if he saved the world. The second was when he told the illustrious Madame Vastra that the universe would save the mortally wounded Clara because it owed him for all the times he had saved the world before. Madame Vastra replied, "The universe doesn't make deals." And yet, the universe appeared to do just that when the Doctor realized that he might find Clara again in another time and place.

If this is the case then Gwen easily could have been another deal struck, perhaps between the universe and someone like The Face of Bode. This ominous character from Doctor Who season one is believed to have been the five-billion-year-old version of Jack Harkness, who had a vested interest in both the existence of Gwen and the keeping of The Rift.

Or does the universe have children?

The answer, however, could be far simpler, and yet, more profound. The universe could be creating its own children, its own seemingly Impossible Girls, in order to achieve certain events or outcomes. Perhaps it sees tasks that must be done, and knows that only certain people can achieve those tasks, so it sends them back into life time, after time, after time in order to achieve those tasks.

For Gwen that task would obviously be minding The Rift. But, the question would still, as of yet, need to be answered, "What is Clara's task?" What task could the universe find for this plucky brunette who loves souffle's that keeps putting her in the Doctor's path time, after time, after time? If Gwen's task is to mind The Rift is Clara's task to mind the Doctor? Perhaps the universe feels he needs a keeper, or maybe just a good, swift kick in the pants. Maybe Clara really is just the result of a deal with the universe.

Or maybe all of these assumptions are wrong. Perhaps the answer is still out there waiting to be discovered. The only way to know is to watch and find out.
