Pro and Cons of Online College

When it comes to going back to school to get your degree there are a lot of options available. If you're considering going back to college, but you have children and a full time job, my article will discuss the pros and cons of online college.

When it comes to going to college there are a lot of options. Some people prefer to stay at home and study while others prefer to go to a more interactive college to study. People make their decisions of which college to go based on many factors, how much it will cost them, how far away the college is, the college's reputation, and so on. For people with children and people who work full time or part time, online college may be next to the only option. I am an online college student. I am currently doing my bachelors with the University of Phoenix online. People have mixed opinions about my college. Some say it's expensive and the quality of learning is not very good. For me I enjoy doing the work on my own without having a teacher, but most people prefer to have a teacher guide them.

Pros

Going to college online gives you the ability to be flexible with your time. This is really helpful if you have children or have a full time job. I also like being able to do my assignments any time I please, as long as I make my deadlines, I'm able to manage my time very well. I usually do my homework when the kids are asleep, this makes my life a lot easier. I also like not having to go anywhere, everything is digital and all the materials I need are provided for me online. I don't have to go to the library for books because my college already has a library online.

Cons

It can be expensive. The tuition for an associate's degree is about 20,000 dollars, and sometimes it can cost more, but I find this is about the same price I would end up paying for transportation books and other materials at a standard community college. Some people would disagree. Another con for some people might be that with online colleges you are held responsible for everything. The teacher is not there to sit with you and explain to you how to do every little detail. You must get hands on and figure it out yourself, the teacher is not going to do your work for you. With online colleges there is very little tolerance for not being able to do the work or submitting late assignments, because they already allow you to be flexible with your time to a certain extent. Also going to college online is what you make it, it's not going to be the social butterfly atmosphere that you would normally think college to be. It's more for people who like to work independently. Some people might argue that the standard of learning isn't what it should be with online colleges. I have to disagree, if you focus on what they teach you in the classes I believe it can be just as efficient as going to a community college.
