Remembering 'Star Wars' and Childhood

Childhood memories, Star Wars, Halloween, 1983, Darth Vader, Princess Leia

I wasn't born yet when the first "Star Wars" movie came out, but I was there for the second one and saw it in the movie theater (though I remember nothing of the event; my parents couldn't get a sitter, so they took their 1-year-old baby with them to the movies. I'm told I was a good baby). Many people talk about the breakthroughs "Star Wars IV: A New Hope" made in the field of special effects, how for the first time it actually felt like you were racing through the vastness of space, instead of watching a rocket ship bounce along on a piece of wire. Other people remember the elaborate costumes and strange, beautiful landscapes (Tatooine, Luke's home planet, was really Tunisia; the Skywalker farm is now a restaurant and hotel).

My earliest "Star Wars" memory is largely unrelated to the movies. On Halloween 1983, I dressed up like my favorite character, Princess Leia, though I was too young to really understand the plot and how she fit into it. Taking me from house to house that year was my father, who made a very convincing Darth Vader.

Both of our costumes were homemade. I wore a long white dress with a braided rope belt, and I had enough hair for my mother to braid into Princess Leia's signature danishes. I remember them feeling heavy and slightly lopsided, but looking at the photo now, they are rather small; it's funny how sensory information shapes memory. My dad says he made his own mask and light saber because it was 1983, and they weren't mass-producing Darth Vader costumes yet. While this is certainly true, secretly I think he liked the creative challenge of it. He cut a plastic milk jug roughly in the shape of a face and spray-painted it black and attached elastic straps. It was a pretty scary mask.

My grandmother took a photo of the two of us on the front steps together, just setting out for a rewarding night of trick-or-treating. People loved our costumes, and, since our neighborhood was small and composed mostly of older couples, I made out like a bandit. This was back when you could clean up on candy, especially in the Northeast (it was also before you had to check your Reese's peanut butter cups for razor blades). I wore my beloved, shuffling Buster Browns and constantly checked up on my Princess Leia danishes to make sure they weren't coming apart; we trick-or-treated at a leisurely pace. My lasting memory of this Halloween was perpetually feeling very small next to my dad, who was gigantic in his long black cape. I knew it was him, but every now and then a porch light caught the shiny black mask, and he turned into the real Darth Vader. Still, I held on tight to his big gloved hand.

Besides dressing up like her for Halloween, I had (and still have, somewhere) a Princess Leia action figure. It's Princess Leia on the Hoth planet (her outfit in "The Emperor Strikes Back"); she has the molded plastic body of a male action figure dressed in a puffy vest and mannish pants to protect her from the freezing cold. Her face could very well be a man's, but her hair is still braided Danishes. I also had R2-D2 and C-3PO action figures, though they were later absorbed into my younger brother's collection. I seem to remember lining up Leia and the robots and acting out various scenes from the movies, particularly scenes where the robots got dismantled and reassembled.

As I've gotten older, I've grown away from "Star Wars"; I still love the movies, and I've been part of a few hyperspace weekend marathons, but something has changed. Maybe it's only my ability to suspend disbelief that's gone. When I was a child, I didn't notice that storm troopers couldn't aim or wonder why the Emperor didn't electrocute himself in the shower. These cynical thoughts had not developed yet - I was still able to believe absolutely in a convincing narrative and a series of beautiful images. This is what I'll miss most when I finally relent and to see the revamped 3D version of "Star Wars I": being able to accept the whole story and become thoroughly lost in it.
