Fantasy Football Tips and Tricks

Every year, millions of fans play fantasy football, yet there are still some who are mystified by the practice. What is fantasy football, and how does one play it effectively? This article explores the basics and gives advice to newcomers.

If you haven't tried it before or are still a novice, you might need some advice before trotting onto the gridiron. Read on!

Step 1: Join a league.
Fortunately this is the easiest step. Yahoo offers excellent, free fantasy football, as does many other websites. These services make what used to be extremely tedious stat tracking easy, and automate most functions. The most popular services will have leagues with plenty of open spots, and if you are late and the season has already started, most of them will have a "mid-season" league as well.

Step 2: Prepare for the draft!
The single most important element of your fantasy team's success is, of course, the draft! Each team will be placed in a draft order, and you'll either gather around a table with your friends (if this is an "in-person" league), but most likely you'll be in front of your computer. So how do you prepare for the draft? If using a computer service, you'll have a ready made "draft order" that is pre-done for you, based on each player's statistics from the year before. If you do nothing, the computer will select for you based on this order. However, you'll probably want to adjust this list. For example, a running back might be coming off a career year. However, running backs often decline once they play more than three years or so in the league. If that player is in his fourth NFL season, you might decide he is in decline, and won't produce the same way he did last year. If so, you'll want to move him down on your draft order.
Reading NFL and sports websites as well as your own intuition can give you some idea of who to move up and down on your draft list.

Step 3: Understand what positions to draft first.

Traditionally, you will want to draft a high scoring offensive player first, such as a quarterback or running back. Then you might want a wide receiver. Tight ends tend to be taken later, and you don't generally take kickers until the later rounds. Some leagues have defensive players, and if they do, those will be late draft picks as well (also true if the league has you draft an entire team's defense and special teams).

Step 4: Manage your team week to week.

Once the season begins, your work as a virtual GM isn't done. Some of your players might not actually be playing in the real world that week, and you'll need to use your bench to fill those slots. Players might get injured in real life: in that case, you'll need to sign a free agent, which leads to our last tip.

Step 5: Use free agents and trades to improve your team.

Losing most of your games? You probably need to make some improvements! To do this, you can either pick up free agents from the remaining pool of players not on other teams, or you can make a trade. Although the pool of undrafted free agents in your league might not seem like much, every year in the NFL there are a few "sleepers" that go undrafted that do really well! A great example of this was DeMarco Murray of the Dallas Cowboys last year. A rookie that was not expected to start, he suddenly was playing due to an injury to Felix Jones. Murray played extremely well: much to the delight of farsighted fantasy league team owners that nabbed him from the free agent pool!

Trades are more difficult: you need to have players another member of your league covets, enough for him or her to surrender the player you want from their team. Often, savvy players will exploit this, so it is this author's suggestion to not trade much if your are a novice fantasy football player.

Following these tips and keeping your team current week to week will help ensure that you have a solid performance. Although a good deal of what makes a championship fantasy team is luck, if you apply skillful drafting, diligent roster management, and keeping an eagle eye on little known players, you'll get some wins in your league this year. Good luck!
