What Are Gear Couplings?

The basic function of gear coupling is to transmit non-collinear torque between two shafts. The teeth sensitive can rectify non-collinear torque design of the gear.

There are several types of gear couplings, out of which two are most frequently used. They are Flexible gear couplings and half gear couplings. Flexible gear couplings are directly connected and installed independently. Half gear couplings are mostly used in applications where floating type of shaft is used. The gear coupling teeth have high backlash, which allows angular misalignment. If there are excess backlash, it leads to vibration. A gear coupling consists of two gears. One is external and another is internal. The external gear has the structure of teeth protruding towards outer surface, and the internal gear structure has teethes on the inner surface. A gear will look like rotating splines. The gear couplings are also used to transform one form of rotation to another form of rotation. This can be achieved by a gear type called Bevel gear. A Bevel gear has a shape of right circular cone with a blunt tip. The efficiency of a gear depends on various factors. The important factor determining the efficiency is the term called "Pitch". The Pitch is the distance between the edge of one tooth to the adjacent teeth.

There are numerous nonferrous alloys, powder metallurgy, cast irons which are used in the manufacturing of gears. However, the most commonly used metal is steel, because of its higher strength to weight ratio and the manufacturing cost is low. Even plastics are used in the recent days.
