Fishing Tip: How to Catch Tautog
Tautog or blackfish, is a popular inshore or offshore fish that resides along the Atlantic coast from Nova Scotia to South Carolina. It is most abundant from Cape Cod to Delaware Bay.
Latin name: Tautoga onitis
Best time to catch: Spring and fall
Also known as: Blackfish, chub, Molly George, oysterfish, tog
Sexual maturity occurs at approximately 3 to 4 years of age. Tautog has a slow growth rate, and can live for slightly more than 15 years. Males usually outnumber females, and are usually larger and live longer than the females. The average size fish caught by anglers is 2 to 4 pounds, which is anywhere from 6 to 10 years of age. Larger tautog can be caught from late October to late November in offshore waters.
Tautog does not undertake extensive seasonal migraÂtions, although it winters offshore at depths of 75 to 175 feet, then moves inshore to spawn in late March to early April when the water temperature reaches 40 to 50°F. When inshore, it inhabits inshore shallow areas over shell beds and around piers. Offshore it inhabits areas around structure formations-rocky bottom, artificial and natural reefs, and wrecks. Tautog feeds at dawn and dusk and is inactive at night. It eats mussels, clams, crabs, barnacles, shrimp, and small lobsters.
Tautog likes colder water, which makes early spring, late fall, and early winter the best times of year to fish. It can also be caught offshore during the winter months. It's best to board a party boat to fish for this species offshore during late fall and winter because the captain knows the locations of wrecks and reefs.
Tautog can be caught from a boat anchored right over a reef or wreck or anywhere along a rocky shoreline, such as jetties, docks, or bridge abutments in the late spring and late fall. Tautog does not roam far from structure; its diet consists of mollusks and crustaceans that freÂquent structure. Fishing for tautog is not for the lazy or laid-back angler. It requires a lot of knowledge and skill to hook and catch these aggressive fish.
Tautog usually shares the same areas as porgies at shallow depths, and codfish and pollock in deeper water. It likes structure where food is plentiful and can be easily found. Once hooked, tautog heads for deeper water within the structure. Try to prevent this, or your terminal tackle can become snagged on sharp rocks or other abrasive structure. Be prepared to replace it if needed. Less is best when it comes to terminal tackle.
When fishing for tautog, it's important to stay alert; the fish often hit the bait as soon as it reaches the bottom. Tautog is known for being an excellent bait stealer, so don't allow any slack in the line, so you can feel the fish below. Once the fish grabs the bait, set the hook hard by raising the rod tip high, then quickly reel up while maintaining a tight line to keep the fish from returning back down toward the structure. If you feel a tap, assume that the bait was stolen and reel up to bait the hook again.
The best bait for offshore deepwater fishing is whole or halved green crab or skimmer clams, which will often attract cod or pollock. For inshore shallow depths, use fiddler crabs, skimmer clams, or inch-long pieces of sandworms or bloodworms, although clams and worms will probably attract undesirable fish, such as bergal (cunner). Keep the bait as close to the hook as possible so it doesn't dangle too far from the barb.
If you're fishing from a boat, use a 6- to 7-foot extra-fast-action, medium to heavy rod with a matching conventional bait-casting reel filled with 20- to 30-pound-test monofilament line. If you're fishing from shore, use a 6- to 8-foot extra-fast-action, medium to heavy spinning rod with a matching spinning reel filled with 25- to 40-pound-test monofilament line. The terÂminal rig hardware should consist of nothing more than a barrel swivel above the hook leader on the main line. A single-hook rig with a sinker of suitable weight will do. Hooks should range from number 6 to number 4 for offshore fishing and smaller for inshore fishing.
When fishing offshore, the sinkers should be 8 ounces or more, depending on the current below.
Carry lots of hooks and sinkers in your tackle box to replace those that are lost within the structure while fishing.
When fishing offshore in late fall and into the winter months, make sure to dress for the cold, and wear waterproof footgear.
