Interview: Kaylee ‘Firefly’ Cosplayer and Blogger Maya Dinerstein

Long before she explored the Whedonverse, people told Maya Dinerstein that she looked like Kaylee from "Firefly" and "Serenity." Do you think she looks like Kaylee?

When I first saw the pictures, I wasn't exactly sure. The character was certainly Kaylee, but I couldn't tell if was it actor Jewel Staite portraying her as she did on the TV show "Firefly" and its corresponding movie "Serenity." The woman in the photo looked just like her - but the message on the blog said otherwise. This Kaylee was a cosplayer, or someone who dresses up and acts as a character.

Brilliantly enough, this Kaylee cosplayer runs an 'ask blog' on Tumblr, which means you can go and ask her questions and she'll answer them as the character. Additionally, she makes animated gifs (moving images) of her responses, and she has the Kaylee mannerisms down flat.

Her real name is Maya Dinerstein, a college student studying in Boston. I spoke with Maya via Skype and asked her all about her cosplay experiences.

Maya describes how she got into the Kaylee cosplay experience.

"…Four or five years ago. People had been telling me that I looked a lot like her. But I hadn't seen the show at that point. I eventually watched it at the end of freshman year, beginning of sophomore year, and then I was totally into it. At that point I made my own coveralls. It's really difficult unless you want to spend a lot of money online. And then I found the ones that I currently use in the thrift store. I didn't sew the patches on before New York Comic Con this year. I guess I would consider that the first time I cosplayed as her," she said.

And yes - this Kaylee has found her Simon - and the first time he appeared on her blog, she received nearly 700 notes ('likes' and 'reblogs' from Tumblr users).

"All these people were reblogging and I have to check all of the reblogs," she explains, describing the process of essentially forwarding blog posts with additional comments on Tumblr. Eventually, a particular comment caught her eye after the topic came up - did this Kaylee have a Simon? Yes - and his name is Aaron.

"I went to his blog to make sure he was cute. [I thought] 'This guy's a cosplayer, that's super cool.' It turned out he was a film student and I'm a film student. And we go to the same school! It was two days before Thanksgiving and we were talking and I abandoned him on Facebook and I got back and I fell down on the floor [because he asked me to dinner]. We've been going out for two-ish weeks now," she says, describing their meeting.

While Tumblr is full of ask blogs, most people use animated gifs of characters (and their actors) to represent the reactions of characters in role play posts. Maya uses gifs on her blog - but instead of using images of Jewel Staite portraying Kaylee in the show, she makes gif of herself answering the questions posed to Kaylee.

"I had seen it done," she says. "There's a really good one for 'Supernatural.' It's always really cute and hilarious! The first step was figuring out how to make gifs."

Maya describes how she really got into the cosplay scene.

"My Kaylee cosplay at NYCC [New York Comic-Con] got a really great reception." After that, Maya attended another convention in Boston, near her school. "And a friend of mine had said 'people think you're actually Jewel!'"

The confusion about Maya's real-life identity isn't limited to convention-goers doing double-takes.

"There was a hilarious question in my ask," Maya explains, referencing the 'ask box' feature users can enable on Tumblr to ask each other questions. "Someone asked me: 'After "Firefly," was it hard to find another acting career?' That's pretty funny. I check the tags of the reblogs and they're like 'Jewel is so hilarious.'"

Maya hopes to attend Dragon*Con in 2020. If she is able to attend, she plans on traveling with Aaron and says the couple will cosplay as Kaylee and Simon. Additionally, she's ordered more costume pieces and accessories, so keep an eye on her blog for updates and further interaction.
