Faucet Supply Line Hook Up Made Easy

Follow this guide for easy supply line hook up on a faucet.

Before changing the water supply lines you must first turn the water off. In most cases under the sink will be a shut off valve. Twist the handle until it stops turning. To make sure the valve has worked turn your sink on. If water continues to drip then you may have to turn the water off to the house. Choose one of these types of supply lines.

Copper Tubing
Some people prefer to use the old style copper tubing supply lines. These lines will last forever but they are much harder to install than the other types. When installing a faucet with copper supply tubes you will need two adjustable wrenches, a copper tubing cutter, compression nuts and brass grommets for each connection. A tubing bender will make the job easier but it can be done with your hands.

Measure the length of copper tubing that you will need. Add two inches to that length. Make slight bends to the tubing to achieve the correct bends. The trick here is to make small bends at a time. It is very important not to kink the lines. After each bend place the tubing in its place. This will give you a visual reference as to the next bend. Try to not bend the last two inches on each side. You need this extra if you must cut some extra length off of the copper supply line. The angles entering the faucet and the shut off valve must match and the tubing must be straight. All of this can be avoided if you are replacing an existing copper line. If so then all you need to do is copy the bends of the one you removed.

Place the copper line in its place. Make sure the nuts and washers are in place. Tighten the supply tube to the faucet first. The grommet or rubber washer must be between the compression nut and to faucet. Use a wrench to tighten this nut. On the shut off end you will need two wrenches. One must hold the shut off valve in place as you tighten the compression nut.

Vinyl Tubing
This type of tubing is easier to bend and work with than copper. It does not last as long but is the cheapest of all of the options. I avoid this type of hard tubing whenever I can. The cost savings is not worth the extra maintenance involved.

Installation is similar to copper tubing. To install these types of supply lines to your faucet you need two wrenches, a tubing cutter, both compression nuts and one grommet for the shut off side. This type of tubing comes with a large end that fits into the faucet.

I find connecting faucets with supply tubes of this style easiest when you hook up the faucet end before you cut the length. Once the faucet end is tight bend the tub to the supply shut off valve and mark the size you need on the supply tube. Cut the line with a tubing cutter. Install this side with a compression nut and grommet. Use two wrenches for this side. One on the shut off valve and one to tighten the nut.

Modern Supply Tubes
This is the easiest way to connect faucets with supply tubes. They are precut and have all the materials you need to connect them. On each end is a nut with a rubber gasket. If you have a leak all you must do is tighten the nut. The angle does not need to be perfect as the tub is flexible. You need two wrenches for this style of supply lines.

To connect faucets with supply lines of this type you must measure the length of the line that you need. Buy the next longest size. Tighten the supply line to the faucet first. Place the other end on the shut off valve and tighten. As always use two wrenches on this side.

After hook up
It Is a good idea to keep some rags and a small bucket handy. Turn the shut off valves on. Look for leaks. A good trick is to use a small piece of toilet paper to feel around each fitting. With this type of paper water leaks show up clearly. If you have a leak try tightening the nut that is leaking. Be careful not to over tighten the hard vinyl tubing. If the compression nut cuts the tubing you will need to start over.

Sometimes after connecting faucets with supply tubes the shut off valve will leak. This can be fixed by tightening the nut directly behind the valve handle. You must use two wrenches when doing this. One on the body and one on the nut. If you do not use two wrenches you are taking a chance of breaking the valve off of the water line that feeds the house.
