Safest Cars for 2020 as Well as Potential Deathtraps: IIHS Safety Ratings Revealed

The IIHS safety ratings help new car buyers choose the safest cars. 2020 will see a number of surprises, in part due to updated roof safety testing. Do you know how to interpret the safest cars designation within context?

Safest Cars 2020

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released its safety ratings and there are some surprises. Ratings range from "good" over "acceptable" and "marginal" to downright "poor." Leading the pack are Ford, Volvo, Subaru and Volkswagen. Upheavals in pecking order and a much shorter list of contenders are due to a change in roof safety standards.

This criterion was revealed by the IIHS in March of 2020. Testing involved pressing a metal plate against one side of a test car's roof; testers measured the point in time that five inches of crush materialized. Grades were awarded to cars based on their abilities to hold up well under a force equal to four times their weight.

Researchers suggested that this ratio increased the odds of surviving a rollover crash by 50%. Top dogs were the Volkswagen Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Honda Element and Jeep Patriot. Poor performers were the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson.

Finding the Grain of Salt among IIHS Safety Ratings

Ranking among the safest cars for the year 2020 is without doubt a prestigious honor. It should most certainly be one component that makes a difference in consumers' new car buying decisions. That being said, there is also the caution to take the results with a grain of salt.

For one, don't let the superior rating of the Ford Taurus (a large car) and the high regards for the Kia Soul (a small car) fool you into comparing the two. The publishers of the IIHS safety ratings are the first to point out that results comparisons between size groups are deceptive.

When the literal rubber meets the road, the car's size and weight have a huge impact on the overall safety of its occupants. Therefore it would be incorrect to suggest that the Ford Taurus and Kia Soul are the two safest cars - unless the statement is accompanied with the qualifier "for their size groups."

Marketers themselves are careful to temper their protestations of product superiority in a cutthroat car selling market. Kia issued a press release basking in the IIHS safety ratings that made the Kia Soul one of the safest cars for 2020 - "in its segment." Even there, let the buyer beware! As Kia continues to also point consumers to the "purposeful Optima, IIHS safety ratings only gave this model a marginal rating as part of its rollover evaluation.

Caveat Emptor!

While the achievement of being among the safest cars is undoubtedly a huge marketing point, consumers must go back to the IIHS safety ratings. Extrapolating a company's overall car safety based on having one or more models among the safest cars for 2020 is a big mistake. The same holds true for comparing cars between size classes.
