If you want your children to value fitness, here is a way to celebrate their achievements, and make it fun.
It really is true that children will do as you do far more frequently than they will do what you say. The single best thing we can do to enhance children's physical development is set a good example. Fortunately, this is very easy to do. Play with them. To really show that muscle work is important to you, play with a purpose. This doesn't mean sign kids up for half a dozen sports and run ragged driving all over town. There are simple things you can do right at home.
If your children are widely spaced in age or ability, or if they are very young, set up a program of "Achieving Your Personal Best". Decide on three to five physical activities that your children can already do. They can be gross motor activities like hopping on one foot, or fine motor activities like stringing noodles on a shoelace. Try to have a mixture of both. Determine how long you will work on the project.
For each activity you choose, make a sign with the child's name and the type of activity. Have each child make a baseline score and record it on the sign with the start date. Each day, the child should do the activity again, but only record the result when it is better than the one before. At the end of the designated time (about a month is good), have a party and celebrate each child's growth and achievements.
If your kids are older, you can have a month long, or summer long marathon of the chosen skills. As each child takes time each day to skip rope or stack Oreos, add that day's number to the accumulated total. At the end of the marathon, present award certificates to each child and go to a ballgame to celebrate.
If you put some energy and attention now into celebrating your child's physical achievements, he will learn at a young age to value his health and fitness.
