KFC Has It Wrong

Kentucky Fried Chicken's commercial that claims getting your kid a drum set is not so smart, was not so smart.

I beg to differ. Was it not so smart for Ringo Starr's parents to get him a drum set? Was it not so smart for Dave Grohl's parents to get him a drum set? What about Phil Collins' parents or Tommy Lee's parents? I would be remiss if I left out Keith Moon, John Bonham, Neil Peart, Buddy Rich, and Gene Krupa's parents.

Not only have these artists been wildly successful, both artistically and financially, but they are responsible for creating millions of smiles around the world with their music.

Who doesn't love to rock with Ringo on the Beatles' "Birthday" or play along with Peart on "YYZ"? Then there is everybody's favorite drum moment: "In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins.

Getting your kid a drum set is smart. Yes drums are loud, yes it's a sacrifice, but I say it's well worth it. Not only are drums are a great outlet for a kid's infinite amount of energy, but playing music in general builds confidence and is known to develop math skills.

Thank goodness my significant other's parents got him a drum set. It enabled him to become a professional drummer at age 15. Drumming enabled Lee to jam with Flea's father and Manfred Mann. It enabled him to play with Firehouse and to have one of the most thrilling moments of his life; playing the Mall in Washington DC on the Fourth of July before a crowd of 150,000 people.

And by the way, we are parents who got their kid a drum set. It was the perfect fourth birthday present for a boy with tons of energy. Smart. Scotty had already been playing a single drum for a couple of years and learning paradiddles. That was 10 years ago and he's still going strong. He's in Middle School Advanced Band and who knows what amazing experiences he will have as he grows as a drummer. Then there is the grandson, who recently got his first drum -- at age 6 months. A trap set is in his future.

KFC, you missed a great opportunity to, rather than dis the drums, applaud the drums, as in drum sticks.
When you say getting your kid a drum set is not so smart, you couldn't be more wrong.
