Louisiana Taking a Big Risk on "A La Carte" Secondary Education Classes
"A la carte" education is the innovative idea that high school students can learn more through more personalized, up-to-date, real-world learning opportunities. Several states are pioneering the idea and letting students opt to spend some time off-campus.
The fact that monotony, conformity, and playing by the same ol' boring rules as everyone else is part of life is why I think the state of Louisiana is risking big trouble in approving "a la carte" education for secondary students. According to Reuters, the state board of education has ruled that high school students may take classes off-campus from private-sector vendors. The driving idea is that students will be able to learn more innovative, applicable, real-world information from professionals in an industry than in a traditional high school classroom. I agree, but think that the disadvantages well overshadow the gains.
One thing students need to learn is that following the rules and developing self-discipline is important. Any "a la carte" education system will likely be lax on those principles. Students could indeed learn more about a trade by venturing off campus, but how many would choose based on noble principles and how many would choose based on ease and convenience? For every motivated teen who sought on-the-job experience with a local craftsman there would be a teen who sought an easy A, and even those who sought pure knowledge and on-the-job experience might be shortchanged by substandard instructors who had no training or education in the field of teaching.
And setting students up for a high school experience of diverse excitement might actually be more harmful than helpful. Students need to know that the real world requires discipline and stick-to-it-ness, not simply the drive to find what is most exciting at the moment. Traditional classes in brick-and-mortar buildings require discipline and study, as does success in the real world. Allowing high school students to "branch out" and pursue less rigorous avenues of study may only lead to lifelong lack of discipline, which students unprepared for the real world of repetition and difficulty.
