Create Christmas Angel Ornaments with Royal Icing
This article briefly discusses how to create Christmas angel ornaments with royal icing.
Do you want to add a few new ornaments to your Christmas tree this year? If so, you may want to think about creating a batch of Christmas angel ornaments with royal icing. In my experience, royal icing angels are elegant looking and enjoyable to create. Here's how to make them:
In order to create the ornaments, you will need a batch of royal icing, sheets of tracing paper, sheets of white cardstock, a roll of waxed paper and a roll of scotch tape. You'll also need an angel graphic, a cookie sheet, a pastry bag, pastry tips and a roll of 1/8 inch double-face ribbon. As far tools go, you'll need access to an electric mixer and a hot glue gun.
Make the Form
Start by using the tracing paper to copy your angel graphic. Then, using a dark colored marker, transfer the angel graphic to the white cardstock. Next, tape the white cardstock to a cookie sheet and cover it with a sheet of wax paper. The wax paper should be wax side up. Afterward, outfit a pastry bag with a number two metal tip and fill it with of royal icing.
Make the Royal Icing
If you can't find royal icing at your local grocery store, you may opt to make your own. It is not that difficult to do. In order to make the royal icing, you will need 16 ounces of powdered sugar, ½ teaspoon of cream of tartar and three eggs. I should also mention that in my experience, the icing comes out better if the eggs are at room temperature.
Once you have your ingredients on hand, place the eggs and cream of tartar into a mixing bowl. Then beat them on medium until you can form soft peaks with the mixture. Next, slowly add the powdered sugar to the mixture and continue to beat it until it turns stiff. Once that happens, scrape some of icing into the pastry bag. Then cover the mixing bowl with a damp towel and plastic wrap before placing it inside your refrigerator. Otherwise, the remaining icing will harden before you have a chance to use it.
Assemble the Christmas Angel
Continue the ornament making process by using the royal icing to create a thick outline of the angels onto the wax paper. Afterward, scoop some of the remaining royal icing into a small bowl and water it down just a bit. Then put the icing back into the pastry bag and use it to flood the areas within the angels' outlines. Afterward, let the angels sit undisturbed for 24 to 36 hours. At the end of the waiting period, the icing should be hard and dry.
Proceed by using the leftover royal icing to decorate the angels. You may also opt to use additional decorative elements as well. Other elements to consider using are colored sugars and candy sprinkles. Once you are done decorating the angels, allow them to dry for another 24 to 36 hours. Then carefully remove the angels from the waxed paper. Afterward, hot glue a hanging loop to each angel. Once that's done, they will be ready for use.
