Product Review: Tether Table Aero
The Tether Table Aero is a portable computer platform that works like a laptop stand top but is lightweight and uses a photography tripod or light stand for the base of the table.

I previously reviewed the Tether Table Premiere which was a pressed board table that is very much like the newer Aero table and was very impressed not only with the main concept but the implementation of the idea. The people behind this great photography tool is continuing to come up with improvements and whole new tools for the concept of tethered photography.
Tethered Photography is simply taking pictures with a camera while the camera is connected to a computer so you can use the computer to take pictures and immediately view them. Tether Table has come up with several tables to use with a stand or tripod as a laptop stand and other products as well.
This type of laptop stand is not only great for photography but for general home use as it doubles as a podium or simple music stand as well as a laptop stand. The Aero does need a light stand or tripod but you can purchase these for as little as $20 for a generic stand or tripod.
The Aero table comes in two sizes, 22 inch by 16 inch and 18 inch by 16 inch but can be ordered in custom sizes direct from the company. The Tether Table Aero is basically a sheet of T6 aerospace aluminum with the two sides bent upward to give the table a ledge on top and bottom.
The aluminum table has a large round mounting post that is about 2.25 inches in diameter and 2.25 inches tall with a 1/4-20 and 3/8 inch threaded hole and a smooth 5/8 inch hole. These three hole sizes and types are the three common stand sizes and tripod sizes in photography for mounting the Tether Table on.
This mounting post is mounted to the table with four screws through the table with tapered screw heads so the screw is flush with the top of the table. The table is very secure when mounting on a stand or tripod and is basically as stable as the stand or tripod is without any wobble from the mount.
The mount has deep holes, roughly an inch and a quarter each for a deep enough hole to create a solid joint between the table itself and the stand. I have used the Tether Table Aero mostly with my wife's 17 inch widescreen laptop and it works great, she prefers the Aero over the Premiere after a small modification.
We both had a small problem with the Aero and using it while sitting at our couch, the lip of the edge is the same thick aluminum and has a sharp enough edge that it is uncomfortable to rest you arm on while typing. It does not cut or scratch but is a bother while typing or using your mouse if you're sitting lower than the top of the table.
You can solve this problem by putting some kind of protection like a corner protector or a piece of tubing on it, I simply cut a line along apiece of flexible water tubing you can purchase from a hardware store and place it on the edge. Now I have a smooth round corner on the edge instead of the blunt edge of the aluminum top.
Other than the edge being a bit of a pain if you rest your arm on it the Aero Tether Table works very well as a laptop stand around the house but the real benefit is while on a photo shoot. The Tether Table Aero weighs 3 or 3.5 pounds depending on the size and is light enough to be very portable and easy to use in the field.
The Tether Table Aero comes with a carry case that protects the brushed aluminum surface and makes traveling with the table simple and easy. The carry case is a nice durable fabric with a zipper and two handles to make toting the table top around simple.
The larger Tether Table Aero, 22 by 16 inch, is large enough to hold a widescreen 17 inch laptop and have enough room on the side for mouse use and a small mouse pad. You can also purchase that small 6 by 8 inch peel and place mouse pad from Tether Tools for a great mouse surface on your Tether Table.
The mouse pad has a peel off backing and is sticky enough to adhere temporarily to the surface of the Aero but you can easily peel it off and move it around. The mouse pad is a nice black finish for superb optical sensor detection and works very well while using the Tether Table Aero.
The Tether Table Aero is a fantastic stand for a laptop and can also be used for general things like a temporary portable podium if you have the need for a light weight podium. The Aero makes an excellent and very professional looking stand for photographers on location to allow customers to view their pictures at the photo shoot.
