Various Dental Filling Options

These are the various dental filling options available.

The most common material used for filling is the amalgam. It is a stable alloy made of mercury, silver, copper, tin and some other metallic components. It is the most researched and trusted material used by dentists. It is durable, comparatively cheaper and easy to use. There has been concern about the use of mercury but the mercury in amalgam combines with other metals to be safe for use as a filler. It is sensitive to hot or cold after the filling is placed. Also, the silver colored filling is not really natural looking.

Another option is the composite filling. These are a mixture of glass or quartz filler in a resin medium which produces a natural looking filling. These are ideal for small or mid sized restorations for mild chewing pressure. The cost is moderate and it gets stained and discolored over period of time.

Ionomers can also be used as a filler option. These are translucent, natural looking material made of fine glass powder and acrylic acids and are used to fill cavities.

Gold alloys is another nice and time tested option available. It contains gold, copper and other metals which result in a strong, durable and highly resistant filler. Due to their malleability, the opposite teeth face only gentle pressure. The only downside is that these do not look natural. Base metal alloys can also be used for filling purposes. These usually have a silver appearance.

Indirect composites can also be used for filling. These materials are similar to those used in direct fillings and are tooth colored. Indirect composites have advantage in that they do not excessively wear opposing teeth. They are not very durable and strength is not as high as porcelain or metal but these are comparatively cheaper.

One factor which should be looked at is while choosing a filling material is whether you are allergic to the chosen material. Sometimes, the metal fillings used are allergic for some people which can cause problems later.

The material to be used should be chosen basis the consultation with the dentist.
