Tips for Brushing Dental Implants

Brushing with dental implants might seem strange until you get used to the new fixtures in your mouth, but much of the oral hygiene required is the same as for normal teeth. Consider the following five tips on brushing your dental implants.

1. Use a Soft Brush

It is easy to feel that because these are dental implants, brushing needs to be more vigorous than with natural teeth. In actuality, however, dental implants are just as fragile as your regular teeth and require a gentle touch.

According to BestSyndication.com, it is a good idea to use a soft toothbrush with a bent handle so you can reach around your implants. Some patients prefer an electric toothbrush so they can more thoroughly brush their teeth, but that is a personal decision.

2. Floss Around Abutments

Perhaps the most crucial aspect of brushing dental implants is the areas in which the implants are next to normal teeth. This is where bacteria will build up and generate plaque, reducing the tenacity of your implants and perhaps causing too much wear and tear.

Use dental floss to get around the implants as well as between your normal teeth. You can also use toothbrushes with narrower bristles to help get in between teeth, but flossing is a good supplement to brushing dental implants.

3. Brush at an Angle

Your gums are just as important as your teeth when brushing dental implants. Make sure to hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle so you get the gum line as well as the teeth and implant surfaces. The only exception here is when brushing across the tops of your molars, in which case you should point the brush straight down on the chewing surface.

4. Ease Up

It is not necessary to bear down on your toothbrush when brushing dental implants. In fact, this can damage the surface of the teeth and lead to replacements much sooner than would otherwise be necessary. To avoid this, keep the pressure light as you glide the brush over the surface.

You can also purchase an electric toothbrush that includes a pressure sensor. It will shut off when it decides you're brushing too hard, keeping you from bearing down too much.

5. Rinse Thoroughly

Until you get used to your dental implants, you might not be as likely to notice food particles remaining in your mouth after brushing. To ensure your mouth is completely clean, rinse thoroughly after every brushing. If necessary, you can use an irrigation device for the back and side teeth.
