Dental Care Tips to Keep Your Horse's Teeth Healthy

As a horse lover and former horse owner, I know how important it is to take care horses teeth. Review these dental care tips for horse for important information on important dental tips for your horse.

1. Make sure your horse sees a good equestrian dentist every six months to a year, to make sure that your horse gets proper care for his teeth and so that you can head off any potential problems with your horse's teeth. The average horse has forty four teeth, which, because of the sheer number of teeth that your horse has, gives rise to the risk that something could go wrong with his teeth. Horse teeth cleaning is an important component of routine pet care for your horse.

2. Make sure your horse's equestrian dentist removes sharp points on your horse's teeth that can cut your horse's tongue and cheeks. Removing sharp points on the teeth of your horse is called floating. Floating, a common horse dental procedure involves filing or rasping down the sharp points of horse teeth. Floating may involve leveling his molars. The object of floating is to maintain symmetry of your horse's teeth so that he can chew freely. Healthy horse teeth are vital to your horse's health and well being.

3. Preventative dental pet care for your horse is important to the health of his teeth, but even though your horse gets routine dental care for his teeth, things can sprout up between routine horse dental visits. If you suspect that your horse is having a problem with his teeth, or you notice that he isn't eating or having difficulty, call the horse dentist right away, and don't wait for the next horse pet care appointment that might not be scheduled for another six months.

4. Watch your horse for the following, as these behaviors may be indicative of a problem with his teeth and may require a visit from the horse dentist: head tossing, pushing on the bit, bucking, rearing, excess salivation, sluggish chewing, changes in behavior, dropping his feed, and inability or refusing to eat, eating less than normal and riding with his head held high. These behaviors of your horse may not necessarily mean that he is having a problem with his teeth, or that he needs dental care, but the only way to know for sure is to have him seen by the horse dentist who can evaluate these symptoms or behaviors in your horse. Don't forget to ask the horse dentist about routine horse teeth cleaning.

5. Remember, starting at the age of five, your horse will need to start having routine horse pet care dental exams from every six months to every year. Horses need healthy teeth to effectively grind and chew their hay and grass. Your horse's teeth quality and general state of good dental health is an important factor in determining whether or not to give your horse processed grains. Horses with poor dental health status tend do fare better and benefit more when given processed feed. Poor dental status is more common in older horses.

It is very important to keep your horse's teeth sound and in good condition. When you are a horse owner, there is so much that needs to be done to maintain your horse's well being, but it is important to note that maintaining the teeth of your horse should be on the top of your list in keeping your horse happy and well.
