King of Cookies Continues Its Centennial Celebration

The first Oreo was sold on March 6, 1912 in Hoboken, N.J. Now, 100 years later, it’s available in more than 100 countries and is the world's top selling cookie.

It's been called the "King of Cookies." That's because Oreo reigns supreme as the number one selling cookie in America.

And, according to its maker, Nabisco, previously called the National Biscuit Company, it's been America's most popular cookie since it was introduced in 1912 - 100 years ago.

"Even early on, it became clear to the National Biscuit Co. that it was one of its flagship brands and the company really supported it. ... [Oreo] has demonstrated decade after decade that it continues to endure," said Becky Tousey, Kraft Foods' corporate archivist, to ABC News in March.

Today, Oreo is not only America's favorite cookie, but the world's.

Kraft Foods reports that it is the best-selling cookie brand of the 21st century, with $2 billion in global annual revenues. Kraft Foods is the proud custodian of Oreo, and Oreo is one of the company's 12 "billion-dollar" brands.

To say Oreo has achieved its fame strictly by the way of lunchboxes or as an after-school snack for a century would be to deny its ability to cross the boundaries of age and appeal to just about everyone.

Even with its unusual name of cloudy origins.

Apparently, no one knows for certain how the cookie got its name since not many detailed records were kept on products 100 years ago. But, Nabisco, the grandchild of the cookie's originator, supposedly kept an oral history which was passed down through the company's employees.

That's where it gets murky.

Some employees say the name came about simply because it was a "nice, melodic combination of sounds with just a few catch letters - and it was easy to pronounce."

Others say the name is based on the French word for gold, or a golden color, used on early cookie package designs.

While still others say the name came from the Greek word for mountain because the first test version of the cookie was hill-shaped.

Whatever the genesis, the Oreo name stuck and in 1913 became the official trademark for the product. One in which millions of people instantly recognize and salivate upon hearing still today.
