Sculpting a Polymer Clay Baby, Intricate Details, Fine Art Made Special

I will inform my reader about polymer clay babies, how I learned about them and how I made my first baby with material I bought from the craft store.

I then read up on the materials I might need, and headed to the craft store, Micheals, here in Lynchburg. I needed a baby push mold for polymer clays. I did find one, purchased it along with many clays to get me started. However this was just the beginning. Even though the mold will allow you to create a baby face, arms, torso, and legs there is still a lot of work that has to be done to make the piece unique and precise. I practiced a few times before I got the hang of pushed and pulling the clay out of the mold. Finally I did make a baby that I was content with to bake. I actually made this baby in a green peapod made out of clay as well, I got really creative with this idea. Many artist will make little clothes for the baby, but since this was my first I want to experiment with the clay.

I worked days on the little baby to perfect the shape I wanted. I finally was ready to bake and paint/gloss the baby. The clay can bake at about 250 degrees in a regular oven for about 10-15 minutes, resulting in a hardened clay figure. Once bake, simply let the figure cool for a few minutes. After the baby has cooled you are ready to sand any rough edges for a smooth surface. You can also buy a small carving tool kit for clay projects at your craft store for a few dollars. The painting comes next; this is the most intricate part of the baby really. The smallest paint brush you can find is what you will need for the detail in they eyes/fingernails and lips. Be sure you have a tight grasp on the brush and you have not drank too much coffee! You can paint your babies in different colors, or even put undertones first to create different affects. Once finished with the flesh and face of my baby, I added small micro beads for the peas. Also I made small clay peas with glitter for a finished peapod that was unique and special. For the hair I found some mohair like fur on an older coat I had and used it for a troll like hair style. Finally my first polymer clay baby was complete.

I can honestly say the first few attempts at getting your mold push through right and the small features are frustrating and will take some time to perfect. However just be patient and eventually the baby will come out how you like. There are so many different motifs from fairy babies, mermaids, even goblin babies that have been collectible pieces made by artist on ebay. I would strongly suggest also learning about the techniques other artist have used and see if any of their tips might help. The little babies make great baby shower gifts, or just a nice gift for a shelf too. This fine art is rare and needs more limelight, hopefully one day the world of polymer clay will have workshops for artist to enjoy and create.
