How to Study Smart in College

College isn't easy, nobody said it would be. It can be easy, however, if you have the right strategic tools pointing you to success.

First, consider the textbook. It matters if the student is able to mark in it. Many universities are renting books, so marking in books may be no longer permitted. If the student has their textbook on their Kindle or Nook, however, they may be able to highlight passages in a variety of colors. The Kindle offers at least five different colors to highlight. The student may also bookmark a page for easy reference. More textbooks are becoming available as ebooks. If students have this option, they should take it--it will make their book bags much lighter.

Next, consider how to take notes. There may too many too many to count, but here are a few. Many students create rough, one-column outlines in their notebooks during the lecture. They put the professor's main points as capital letters, moving down with minor points in lower case letters and numerals. There is also the two-column notes, where a term goes one side and the definition on the other--commonly nicknamed as "T-notes." This may work well, but for a professor who speaks quickly, some of the lecture may be lost. A mind map may be an alternative note-taking solution, where the student places the main idea in the center and branches off the minor or supportive ideas. Additionally, in order to achieve success, the student has to find the right atmosphere. For instance, a student that must have it quiet to focus may choose the campus library. This would give them the opportunity to get out of their dorm or fraternity house in order to study for their chemistry exam. If they had stayed in the dorm, they might be open to such distractions as party invites, phone calls or loud music. All of these will not help them in achieving good grades by the end of the term.

Finally, it's all about time management in college. Really--this is the core of college success. Avoid procrastination when it comes to homework, because it does not pay in the long run. Late-nighters and waiting until the last minute are both terrible ideas. Instead, students should do homework in the middle of the day when their energy is high and they are well-rested. This is when their brain is more awake and more willing to absorb new information. Similarly, after about twenty or thirty minutes, switch subjects. If the student was studying history, maybe start doing math or biology homework. The student won't get burnt out, and they will be more successful. For more time management tips, click here:
