Before and After

The Old Testament provides the best of media in arts, literature, storyline, drama, lyrics, and forecasting than any news organization, website, record company, or entertainment network could ever produce. Why do we take it all for granted?

As I began to really study and delve into the Old Testament I began to realize that my faith was not really complete without internalizing what God was saying to me. It was also apparent that my understanding of World History was also lacking by previously approaching The Old Testament more as literature, than the Word of God and human history.

As a media executive, I took away from the reality of God's instruction in the creative process, the use of our gifts and talents in everything we do, that everything is to be done to worship Him, and that He has always had a plan to redeem His people. As a journalist the detailed reporting of the Exodus, the wise sayings in Proverbs, the research in the accounts of Numbers, and Chronicles and what the research says in historic context is much more objective than our census, or news polls!

As the Old Testament takes us through the poetic books, there is theatre and drama that rivals Shakespeare, lyrical content that trumps the finest of today's top lyricists, and instructions on what to look for when choosing musicians. The stories of inspiration from Ruth to Esther, what true forgiveness is all about in the books of Samuel, and the laments of Solomon, and the monologues and dialogues found in Job are more than great storyline, they are life changing. All of the lives of the leaders and major figures in the Old Testament have two sides of them. They are all totally human, all of them are sinners, and yet many of them, warts and all, are totally in love with God. The fulfillment of the best of the role models is the one who is promised throughout the Old Testament, and He is the Christ. I learned a lot from reading the entire Old Testament answering the questions and writing these essays.
The Bible is a before and after story that reflects our lives before we know about our Savior. The Old Testament is like "my before" story, a believer in God. The New Testament is like "my after" story. The heritage of the story put together is the story of the integral parts combined in the big picture of the full body of work.
