'Avatar' Gives James Cameron Two Films in Top 5 Highest Grossing of All Time

The blockbuster success of 'Avatar' crowns James Cameron as 'King Of The Movie World' - the Canadian movie director of Hollywood now has two films in the Top 5 Highest Grossing Movies of all time.

Leonardo DiCaprio screamed this in the fictionalized movie about the most famous cruise ship disaster in history. Appropriately enough, when the writer director who wrote that line accepted his Oscar at the Academy Awards, he brazenly emulated his fictional hero. With Titanic still the number one grossing film of all time, comes James Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar. Cameron's latest action packed spectacle is already in the number four spot on the list. Undoubtedly, the silly boast about being Earth's head royal now takes on resonance.

Not only is Avatar being hailed as a no holds barred science fiction romp, but the new computer effects wizardry and cameras developed for the movie, promises to usher in a new way of making movies. We all know how fickle the movie going public can be. What's hot now, is oh so not a few short years - or even months later. However, with James Cameron retaining his titan Titanic spot for more than 13 years, and his Avatar being hailed by audiences and critics alike as nothing short of a visually jaw dropping cinematic miracle, Cameron now rules as king of Hollywood film directors.

The Canadian - yes one of the most successful directors in Hollywood was born in Canada - started his career in low budget king Roger Corman's stable. In 1981, Cameron was hired only to do FX on the sequel to Piranha, Piranha II: The Spawning, but when the director departed, he was chosen to helm the project. We may barely remember his first film, but this inauspicious break started the career of the confident movie mogul we know today.

In 1984, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who wasn't exactly a household name at the time, became Cameron's nearly unstoppable killer android in The Terminator. Also starring future wife Linda Hamilton, the low budget sci-fi thriller did wonders for both actor and director. The 1991 sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, would bring both Cameron and Schwarzenegger back into the same adrenaline pumped world of future death and destruction. This combination would again bestow box office gold and critical acclaim onto the now highly sought after filmmaker.

After 1997's Titanic, Cameron did TV (Dark Angel) and also another Titanic themed film, Ghosts of the Abyss (2003), but this time it was a documentary. Though fans enjoyed these projects, they eagerly awaited another feature film from him. Judging from the stellar financial performance of Avatar so far, they've clearly not been disappointed, and have unanimously crowned James Cameron 'King Of The Movie World."
