Selecting Outdoor Sleeping Bags for Your Kids

Although there's nothing like a down bag for warmth, comfort, and compressibility, down isn't appropriate for children. It offers zero protection if it gets wet, which is too great a risk to take where kids are concerned.

- Hollofil

- Quallofil

- Polarguard

- Thinsulate Lite Loft

- Primaloft

Primaloft is known as a "synthetic down" and has a very soft hand, i.e., it feels nice to the touch. Even when it's damp, Primaloft's polyester microfibers have the compressibility and insulating properties of down. Both Primaloft and Thinsulate are used in high-quality sleeping bags and outerwear.

In selecting bags for your kids, consider the manufacturer's comfort rating. This is the coldest temperature at which a properly fitting bag should be cozy. However, "comfort" is a subjective factor. Some kids sleep warm. Others may need a warmer set of long underwear for bedtime in the woods. For summer camping, look for a bag rated down to at least +30° F. Don't make the mistake of buying sleeping bags that are too big for your kids, thinking they will grow into them. They lose too much body heat just warming up all that extra space.

Babies can be dressed in a fleece bunting, then zipped into an adult's parka for a comfortable night. For slightly older children, Tough Traveler makes a modular bag that "grows" with the child. The basic bag plus two extensions will take a child from the age of three (or a large two-year-old) up to age ten (or a slender child who is five feet tall). This sleeping bag is what is known as a technical bag-that is, it has all the bells and whistles of a serious, adult sleeping bag. It uses synthetic filling with a high insulation factor. It is highly compressible. It has offset quilt construction, baffles, and a ripstop nylon shell. If your child is taller than five feet, you will be able to find well-made, small-adult-size bags on the market.

You can sew or purchase flannel sleeping bag liners. If any of your kids are accident-prone, take along flannel-covered rubber sheets and extra sets of sleepwear. Along with a good bag, you will need a sleeping pad for each child. Whether you choose a self-inflating thermal pad or a simple, half-inch-thick piece of closed-cell foam, a sleeping pad is necessary to insulate the sleeping child from the cold ground.

If your children's bags have full-length zippers, they can be used as comforters on their own beds at home. Kids who become attached to their bags like a favorite blanket will feel right at home in the woods. A backyard sleepout with the tent is a prerequisite before your first trip of the season to determine who likes to sleep where. Once in the backcountry, everyone will then be able to get a good night's sleep.
