Web Quest for 6th Grade
INTRODUCTION
Human beings can adapt and survive in extreme conditions. Hurricanes, tornadoes, fires and earthquakes all provide threats to the lives of people, as well as, to their home. Often people need help to cope and rebuild their lives. In your research, you will lean about threats, survival techniques, and how people cope in disasters. You will learn the areas that are most prone to these types of disasters. You will also examine individual responsibilities during a disaster situation.

THE TASK
You will be preparing an informational video, map, and class book using word processing on surviving natural disasters. Each teacher-assigned group will focus on one type of disaster. Within the group, you will each assume the role of a news reporter, a meteorologist, a Red Cross volunteer, or a survivor of the disaster that your group selects from the selection bag. You will work together in groups of four to provide your presentation on either hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, or earthquakes.

THE PROCESS
In your group, you will each select a specific role to play and investigate as you explore the Internet links. As you research your topic and role, remember that you will be presenting your investigation both orally and in written form. If you follow the steps below, your research will go more smoothly.

First, in your group, decide whether you will assume the role of news reporter, meteorologist, Red Cross volunteer, or a survivor for your type of disaster. Before you select your role, read what you will be expected to include in your portion of the presentation.

NEWS REPORTER
1. You will need to create an introduction for your disaster. Tell who you are and
what you are doing.
2. You will set the stage for your topic using statistics about your disaster.
3. You will be responsible for the transitions from one role player to another.
4. You will summarize your group report and at the end, challenge viewers to be prepared for your
type of disaster if it happens to occur in your geographical area.
5. You will need to produce the script for the presentation.

Meteorologist
You will describe and show on a map where and when your type of disaster most often occurs.
What conditions lead to your disaster?
Are there different categories of your disaster and if there are, what are they?
How is your disaster tracked or predicted?
How does wind speed affect your disaster?
What makes your disaster unique?

Red Cross Volunteer
Where are the local shelters available to disaster victims?
Can anyone in a disaster use the shelters?
How do you help people cope with injuries or loss of family or homes?
Do you have social workers and doctors available to help or how do you recruit helpers?
How and where do you get supplies?
Make a brochure showing what the Red Cross does.

SURVIVOR
How will you suggest that the residents prepare their homes for the disaster?
What supplies will you need to survive the disaster?
How will you decide whether to stay or evacuate the situation?
What accommodations will you advise people to make for their pets?
Draw a survival kit illustrating the items needed in case your disaster occurs where you live.

Now that you have read the tasks and have decided which role you will assume, begin your research. Be sure to take notes as you search. You may want to bookmark the sites where you found your information so that you could easily revisit them.

When you have completed your Internet research, formulate your answers into a report, making sure that you remember to answer the questions called for in the tasks. When you write your report to put into book form, be sure to use proper paragraph form, remembering to check for proper grammar, capitalization, punctuation, indentation, and word usage.

After you have completed your reports, you will need to create a map of the areas your disasters may occur, making sure to color code areas of most occurrences. Be sure to include all parts necessary for a map.

After you have your reports and maps ready, you will need to fine-tune them in written form and then practice in your groups as if you were giving a newscast. This will prepare you to be videotaped.

After you have been taped, your report pages will be collected and bound into a class book on survival.

CONCLUSION

You have studied four of the major disasters that people in the United States face, depending on where they live. You have examined how humans and animals can adapt and survive in extreme conditions. It makes you wonder whether or not a person should think carefully when deciding where in the United States he/she should live. If you live near the coastal areas, you face the wind and water problems that a hurricane might bring. If you live on the Great Plains, you face tornadoes and wildfire. When you choose to live near the Ring of Fire, you may have to encounter an earthquake. No matter where a person decides to live, disasters may happen and we have to cope with survival.
