Integrity and How It's One of Your Best Assets
In 20-plus years of business development and consulting I've learned the demands of my clients. And it's not simply a matter of using the word integrity, it's having a clear definition of how it affects your success.
I recall the days when business wasn't so great. However, I always kept conscious of those that never turned their back on me when business was down. In fact, I earned more respect for them because they were always willing to ask me what they can do to help. And it was those relationships that I cultivated over the years that kept me striving forward. Bottom line is, you'll never find yourself having to look behind your back because you did someone wrong or failed to be honest. Integrity goes a long way.
Whether your a salesperson, sales manager, CEO or of any other title or position the best asset you can have is your integrity and to gain that of others. I've always found it to be most rewarding come the end of the day when I consciously focused on my clients needs and by respecting their decisions. Even if it meant we don't do business today, it may be a reason for consumating business tomorrow.
So whats one of the worst things you can do to loose integrity as a salesperson? It has to be cold calling. Let's be honest, no one likes cold calling. Especially the recipient. It's simply an invasion of ones time. Period! Again, as my Grandfather told me, being respectful of ones time is crucial -so don't forget it.
In every successful business that I own or have interest in, there's one thing I've never tolerated and that's salespeople and staff that don't know the meaning of integrity. The lack thereof has no place in my world and that of my businesses. I've witnessed too many companies that fail to deliver what the customer or client expects. For many companies it's their customer service, while others it's key management personnel or a combination of both. Have you ever faced a company that just never seems to get it right or they fail to solve a very simple problem? I think we've all encountered these situations. I know I have, and more times than I can count on my fingers. I find it terribly sad that so many businesses fail to address these issues internally. Yet, I have found others that deliver exceptional service and integrity is of the utmost importance.
So whats the ultimate reward? The answer is what you do to implement this asset into not only your career, but in your life. Just be honest with yourself and what the word integrity means to you. Depending on your definition and use of it, you'll gain more than respect. You'll find success, confidence and lifetime referrals. A salespersons dream... imagine you're phone ringing without cold calling or your email box flooded with people that need your service.
If you're heading down a dead end road, facing a financial challenge or find yourself breaking through the barrier of other peoples time and space, heed my Grandfathers words every single day as I do and make a change that will better your future.
