  • In this volum the Plays are arranged in the chronological order of their composition. Naturally, no claim to finality is made in a subject so beset with difficulties
  • but the sequence may not be taken as fairly representing the general results of recent research.
  • The time-honored division into Comedies, Histories and Tragedies, dating from the First Folio and since universally followed, has been abandoned, in the belief that there were room and need for an edition that should enable readers to approach the body of the plays, not as a static monument of achievement, but as a vital and growing organism revealing the evolution of the poet's personality and genius.

Downton Abbey: Not Your Average Stuffy British BBC Drama

So what can an over-the-top British period drama about the similarities and contrasts between a wealthy familiy and their servants teach this ol' gal? A whole heck of a lot!

Lesson 2: Every Other Couple Will End Up Together Except the Ones Who Really Belong Together, and When They Do Finally End Up Together....One of Them Dies.
From the very first instant that Matthew and Mary Crawley encountered one another, viewers everywhere knew they were destined to be together. Though the two initially did not care for one another, we were able to put aside the fact that they were cousins (distant, but still) and wish for a happy ending.....once again, see the Christmas Episode of Season Three (in case you haven't heard, Matthew dies). We also have Lady Sybli and her politically liberal, and poor, husband Tom Branson. Lady Sybil defied many people to marry the love of her life then she got pregnant and died giving birth to Sybil jr.

Lesson 3: You'll Always End Up Feeling Sorry for The Villain at Some Point.
Compassion is wonderful and an attribute that many lack today, but should we feel compassion and empathy for those that do and have wronged others? That, my friends, is a philosophical question that I don't care to break into at the moment. However, every 'Downton' viewer felt exactly that when Thomas Barrow, the Crawley's spiteful valet, experienced several downfalls during season three. Did the potholes on the road of life cause Thomas to change his ways? We will have to find out in August.

Lesson 4: True Love Will Prevail (unless one of them is killed off).
As tongue-in-cheek as some of these comments are, they are still very much thematic elements that apply to so many drama. This lesson has allowed me to restore my faith back in humanity. The couple that taught me this lesson was of course John and Anna Bates. Meeting in season one and then secretly carried on a very innocent relationship (no sexual affair) until they were free and open to marry. Throughout their many obstacles (Thomas, John being arrested for his wife's "murder", etc.) these two would not give up their love for each other. It was pleasantly endearing.

Lesson 5: The Lines Can be Blurred Between Social Classes.
Though it may only be a show, 'Downton Abbey" taught me that the rich and the not-so-rich can still co-exist. As a matter of fact, there were many instances in the show in which a member of the Crawley family confided in or sought the help of their his or her most trusted servant (take Lady Mary asking Anna for her confidence and guidance during the whole Turkish Ambassador debaucle). Ultimately, it is possible for us to look beyond the situation of a person and see them for what they really are....human beings.
