On Failure in School, Bad Grades, Coddling Children, and Whether a Boy Should Walk Around in His Underwear
This parenting advice column warns a teen not to tell his parents they are to blame for his personal failures. We also address the issue of boys strolling about the house in their skivvies.
Should I tell my parents they are the reason I am failing? Ever since I was little, my parents always did things for me. I have a learning problem. My parents did some of my homework problems, and my teachers thought I needed help in most subjects. I always received help in school and took easier tests. Now I'm a junior in high school and barely passing. I don't know what college to apply to or where to go from here. My parents asked me why this is happening. Should I tell them?
Methinks I see why your parents felt the need to help you with everything. Defeatist attitudes get old quickly, and many people would rather do the job for you than listen to complaints.
Did your parents help you by coddling you? Probably not. Do they bear the blame for your lack of success? Absolutely not. Do not under any circumstances tell your parents that you blame them for your problems.
Your letter wasn't long enough to tell the whole story, and while your parents may have made some mistakes, they also may have done their best to encourage you. Stop blaming your parents. If you tell them that your difficulties are their fault, you will probably hurt them badly, and it certainly won't make you feel any better.
Did the grade school help you by giving you extra assistance? Possibly not. Some children benefit from special help and others do not. But people who prefer to blame others for their own problems can always find potential culprits. Not everyone grows out of that stage. But many do - mostly those who decide they want a better life for themselves.
If you're barely passing, put more time into your classes. Study harder. Talk to your teachers for extra help if needed, but don't expect them to customize the lessons as your grade-school teachers did. With your parents' permission, look into study groups or homework-assistance Web sites. Some people find school easy, while others must work very, very hard just to pass. If you are one of the latter, then you may have to walk a rougher road than your friends. But far too many people have done the necessary work and succeeded for you to give up.
If you can't get into a traditional college, then consider a trade school or community-college program. The academic climate has never been friendlier for kids who want to continue their education beyond high school. Most students willing to put in the time, go to class, and make an effort can attend postsecondary school these days.
Is it normal for a 9-year-old boy to walk around the house in his underwear?
Normal isn't the issue. In many homes, the conduct you describe is quite common. In general, boys are more comfortable with their bodies than girls.
The Bible says no man ever hated his own body. Most men can look in a mirror and believe that the pudgy, pasty image in front of them could get back into shape easily. Even if they were never in shape in the first place. A lot of boys simply don't care about such minor annoyances as clothing. And if their parents don't enforce a no shoes, no shirt, no service rule, they might stroll around in their undies all day long.
So if you know of a boy who spends a lot of time in tighty whities at home, don't hold it against him. Eventually, as the boy gets older and begins to care more about his appearance, he will probably become more conscientious about covering up, even at home. Parents can help him reach this point sooner by requesting that he wear sweats or other comfortable pants anytime it is not bedtime.
