Tennis Courts in Norfolk, VA

A review of the top tennis courts to play at in the Norfolk, Virginia area. Doesn't matter if you are a beginner or at an advanced level, if you're looking for a court, you'll find what you need here.

Lakewood Park is a public facility that is located at 1612 Willow Wood Drive. Its right across the street from the Norfolk Public Library. The cost is free and the nine gated tennis courts are located right in the heart of the park. There is nothing but green trees around it and at night you get a nice breeze off the water located to the south of courts 7, 8, and 9. The courts were just redone back in 2020 and now are a nice black asphalt. There are now lights that work on all courts so fear not at night if your game is running alittle long. Also if you have no one to play with, don't worry, there are two half courts with a wall for you to play off of. When you get done feel free to sit on one of the benches under one of the many trees. In the summer its perfect after you've played for an hour or two. The restrooms aren't exactly top notch facilities but they are reasonably clean especially in the summer. Only problem is there is no snack bar or anything like that. However in the fall there is usually football going on Saturdays so there will be a truck selling food out there if you get hungry. Other than that bring what you need. I've played here many times and its very nice and relaxing.

Tidewater Tennis Center is a private members only facility that is located at 1159 Lance Road. This is by far the premier place to play. They have four indoor heated and air conditioned courts. The courts are rubber like Rebound Ace and can play very quickly. Prices vary depending on skill level and what type of membership you want. They do come in 6 month and 12 month membership plans. The facilities are top notch and the locker room is always clean especially the shower area. There is a snack bar and pro shop in there if something is needed. At this place it really doesn't matter if you are a beginner or at an advanced level you will get treated the same. They do offer classes that are taught by USTA certified staff. The cost is $70.00 and the classes are for four weeks in which you have five weeks to get those four weeks in. Or if you want you can just drop in for $20.00 per class to see if you like it. Don't worry though if you don't know what level you are as they will evaluate you and put you in the right class. There hours of operation are 7 am to 11 pm (Mon, Wed, Fri), 8 am to 11 pm (Tues and Thurs) and 8 am to 10 p.m. (Sat and Sun).

Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center is pay for court time type facility. Cheaper for members not so much for non-members. There are eight climate controlled courts and twelve outdoor courts. They use the same surface as the US Open (Outdoor Hard). They have locker rooms for both men and women and have a pro shop located in if you should forget to bring something. The membership is $400 a year for "Family" and $250 a year for "Individual" plans. However with these memberships you still have to pay court fees which range from $25-$35 an hour for members and $35-$45 an hour for non-members. They do allow numerous things like buying block times and also have tennis party rentals on weekends in which you can get 4 courts reserved for 3 hours for $200. While this is probably the nicest facility its also one where the novice player probably shouldn't go as it can get crowded and isn't really for people who just want to play around. Nevertheless, if you still want to experience the best facility in Hampton Roads than go here. There hours of operation run from 8 am to 10:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday and 8 am to 7 pm Friday through Sunday. Building does close though on holidays and special events as it is located on a college campus.
