Review of Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ

It may have started out as a convenient school in the state capital where undergrads could study businesss, but it has become a full blown university with a lots of undergraduate programs and even Division I Athletics.

What a Difference More Than a Century Can Make. In 1865 , just after the conclusion of the Civil War, the city of Trenton, NJ , the business and governmental center of the state, seemed crying out for a business school to help to train the next generations for jobs of the post Civil War era. Rider College was founded in response to that call. In its early days Rider was chiefly a business school, for men, in Trenton.

In short order, within just a year, the first women were admitted establishing Rider as a co-educational school. During the following century even more dramatic moves were made. For example by steps the curriculum was expanded, first to include studies in education and then gradually incorporating the liberal arts and sciences while all the time maintaining a business program. A most recent change in the academics at Rider has been the incorporation of the Westminster Choir School and the granting of university status to what is today Rider University

The location of the school was changed too and Rider moved out the city of Trenton to the town of Lawrenceville which sits about halfway between Trenton and Princeton. A review of Rider University, Lawrenceville, NJ today shows you an institution far different from what was started back in the mid 19th century. Still Rider University resembles the Rider College of those early days in the effort it puts forth to prepare students to meet the world they find around them.

So, Is Rider One School or Two Rider University offers its undergraduates some 60 degree bearing courses of study. Rider University started as a business school and today still maintains a College of Business Administration. But Rider has stepped beyond the past and also has in place the College of Liberal Arts, Education and Sciences which meets many other student interests.

In a rather unusual step, Rider University has drawn under its university umbrella the Westminster Choir School which offers majors in music and in the fine and performing arts. The unique aspect of this incorporation is that the Westminster Choir School was at one time an independent facility and is located on an entirely separate campus in Princeton, NJ.

This combination of sites and curriculum interests has help Rider to offer an ever more diversified set of options for those looking ahead to college. Between the two campuses there really isn't much that is left out in terms of student academic interests.

What Rider University is perhaps most proud of is not the variety of its classes but their size. The student : faculty ratio at Rider is a rather spectacular 13:1. This ratio allows for small classes and of course classes actually taught by professors not graduate assistants. Perhaps this is why U. S News and World Report lists Rider College as one of the colleges in the "top tier" of colleges and universities in the North Region.

Student Activities and Organizations. With nearly 6,000 undergraduates at Rider University it is no surprise to discover all of the activities that are available when school is out. Depending on your personal tastes and interests you may be drawn to Greek Life and pledge a fraternity or sorority , or how about taking part in one of the many service options. You will find chances to get involved in student government or leadership programs, religious organizations or activities that are recreational or centered on the arts. All of these interests and many more are catered to by student led organizations on campus at Rider University.

Rider University is also designated by the NCAA as a Division 1 school for intercollegiate sports competition and plays in the Metro Atlantic Conference. For varsity ready students there are 20 different men's and women's athletic programs from which to choose. As fun as it might be to watch competitive athletics, not everyone plays at varsity level. Rider University recognizes the need students of all ability levels have for physical activity. That's why there are options here for intramural and club sports . Rider University also has a new, state of the art recreation center that is fully loaded with all the courts, workout areas and track space that you could ever need along with lots of top flight recreational equipment.

Rider University and the Community When you attend Rider University you are not limited to life on the campus. Rider recognizes the importance of feeling at home in the community of which you are a part. At both of its campuses in Lawrenceville and in Princeton a real effort is made to involve student in the community and also to bring the community into the life of the university.

As a result when you come to Rider you come into not just a campus community but a new home town. You will find opportunities to serve that community and learn from it during your four years at Rider University. It is meant to be a mutually beneficial relationship that is not always part of a university experience.
