Preparing Your Pets for Emergencies: Birds

What will you do with your pet bird in the event of a natural disaster? Tips, suggestions and considerations.

Microchip Your Bird
Microchips are not just for dogs and cats. Should you loose your bird in an emergency, a microchip will allow anyone who finds the bird to return it to you. If your bird has a leg band, make sure the information matches your current contact information.

Train your Bird
"If you do not feather clip your bird, make sure they can fly down from higher areas. Birds who lack confidence in their flight ability will have a difficult flying down out of a tree to their owner," recommends Deana Walz, aviculturist at the Living Planet Aquarium in Utah. "Also, teach your bird to go into a travel crate. This will be beneficial if you need to leave your home in a hurry." Training will help strengthen the relationship between you and your bird, who will be looking for comfort and familiarity during an emergency situation.

Get a Travel Crate
Make sure you have a travel crate for your bird. Even if you generally do not cage or crate your bird, an emergency situation requires special circumstances. The website Chirp n' Squawk recommends labeling the crate with the bird's name, your name, address and phone number, vet's name, address and phone number, and an emergency contact. It may also be beneficial to write Reward When Returned To Owner on the crate to facilitate return of your bird.

Research Your Shelter Options
Many shelters for people cannot take pets. Red Cross shelters are only able to accept service animals, and will not be able to house your bird. There are some designated pet-friendly shelters where you and your companion can stay together, but make sure they accept all kinds of pets, not just dogs and cats. Your best option may be to research animal shelters or vet clinics in your area that will house your pet in an emergency. Options include bird rescue groups or other bird owners who may not have been as seriously effected by the emergency you are dealing with. Joining a local bird society can help you network with other bird owners in your area.

Pre-program Your Cell Phone
Once you have decided on your best options for emergency shelter, program the numbers into your phone. Even if you are unable to make any calls, the information will be with you should you need to give it to neighbors, emergency workers, etc. Know the contact information for shelters, bird sanctuaries and rehabs in your area. If your bird does fly away, these will be the areas you are going to call.

Paperwork
Many pet-friendly shelters will require proof of current vaccinations. Create a folder of all applicable paperwork for your pet and store it with your own personal emergency information. Include microchip number, current vaccines, and a recent picture that shows identifying marks. Some emergency shelters require pre-registration to take your pet during a natural disaster.

Get a Rescue Alert Sticker
A Rescue Alert sticker for your window or door will let emergency workers know there may be a pet inside the house.

Neighbors
Designate a neighbor who is willing to check on your bird in the event that you are not home when a natural disaster occurs. This should be someone with whom your bird has a decent relationship, such as a family member or your regular pet-sitter. Write up instructions for crating your pet, where the travel and emergency kits are, and any other pertinent information. Go over the ideal evacuation of your pet with your neighbor. Provide written authority for them to act on your behalf.

Travel and Emergency Kits for Your Pet
As you prepare for emergency evacuations of the people in your household, include your pet's needs as well. Bring food, water and medications for your bird. Also prepare a first aid kit for your bird. For a list of supplies to go in each kit, see below. Bird First Aid kits are also available commercially.
