New Places Worth Visiting in Hanover, PA

Several new businesses have opened in Hanover, PA that are well worth taking the time to visit. You can get a tour of the medical fitness center, get a free exam and x-rays at the dental office, and some of the most delilcious desserts at the bakery.

The newest place of business is Aspen Dental, which took over and remodeled a building vacated by Hollywood Video on Eisenhower Drive in north Hanover. It's conveniently located near a Wal-Mart superstore, Red Lobster and other high-traffic businesses. Although I had used a small dental practice previously, I decided to try Aspen Dental. Their advertising claims of professional, caring staff is true. For new patients, they offer a free new patient exam and x-rays, which is a great incentive for those who do not have dental insurance. They also offer a 10% discount to senior citizens for everything except oral surgery. Aspen Dental accepts all forms of insurance and will accept cash, check or credit card for services rendered. They also have in-house financing for those who qualify.

The Medical Fitness Center, located at Hillside Medical Center on Fame Avenue, has been open for several months. Hours of operation are 6:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. Mondays - Thursdays, 6:30 a.m. - 6 p.m. Fridays, and 6:30 a.m. - noon on Saturdays. A physician's referral is required for membership, which costs $50 per month with unlimited time membership. Each member receives a fitness assessment prior to starting an exercise program. The facility has a health education room, physical therapy area, group exercise room, a pulmonary rehabilitation area, locker rooms with showers, and a large heated pool (30' x 50'). Equipment includes strength machines, treadmills and elliptical machines, weights, recumbent and upright bikes, and stair climbers. The lounge offers free coffee and tea, a sitting area, and tables to play chess, checkers and backgammon. I started going to the pulmonary rehabilitation area in December, where I have made a lot of friends with both the nurses and clients. Many clients who do not have severe medical problems prefer this fitness center to other gyms like Gold's Gym.

The Broken Cookie is one of the newer businesses, located in a small shopping center on Carlisle Street at the northern end of Hanover. They are open from 6 a.m. - 9 p.m. Tuesday - Thursday, 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. Fridays, 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. Saturdays, and 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sundays. This is not just a cookie shop, though. They also make and sell freshly baked Danishes, muffins, monkey bread, scones and eclairs. My favorite is their éclair with Bavarian cream. Prices are reasonable and service is pleasant. You can purchase whole cakes ranging in price from a small cake (serves 4-8) at $13.99 up to large ones (serves 70-80) for $99.99. They will also make specialty cakes for birthdays, graduations, holidays, showers and weddings. The Broken Cookie is one of the better businesses in Hanover, with good prices and delicious desserts.
