How to Take Care of Your Bicycle's Chain

This article describes the proper care and maintenance for a bicycle chain.

Water and dirt are a chain's worst enemies, especially when they work together. When small particles of dirt get trapped in water, they act like sandpaper on the critical surfaces of the chain. They can also penetrate between the links and bushings of the chain, causing premature wear. However, this can be prevented by a properly lubricated chain, which gives the added benefit of rust protection.

Keeping your chain clean and well-lubricated is the best thing you can do for it. The cleaning part is crucial, because adding fresh lube onto a nasty chain doesn't help anything. Basically, you should clean and lube your chain once every three weeks, unless you do a lot wet riding or if it looks like it needs it.

Cleaning your Chain

To give a bike chain a proper cleaning, you'll need three things: A wad of paper towels, a light-duty degreaser, and an old toothbrush. Bicycle-specific degreasers work best, and are available at any bike shop for around ten dollars. All you need to do is spray down your chain with the degreaser, let it sit for a minute, then give it a scrub with the toothbrush until all the dirt and old grease comes free. Then, wipe the chain until its dry with the paper towels. If your chain was really dirty, it's a good idea to give it another coat of degreaser and another wipe down until it shines. Let it dry completely before applying lubricant.

Lube your Chain

You can pick up bicycle-specific chain lube at your local bike shop. It is important to use this and not something like WD-40, because WD-40 is not actually a lubricant and won't last long. For bikes, there are two general categories of chain lubricants. Wet lubricant is useful if you ride through a lot of mud, because it resists water. However, it tends to be gummier and will eventually attract more dirt. Dry lubricant is great for all-around riding, and is generally used by 75% of bike riders. Your local bike shop will carry multiple brands of both types, and will be able to help you decide which type of lube suits your chain best.

To lube your newly-cleaned chain, take your bike outside and lean it against a wall or tree. Make sure your pedals are free to spin backwards, and use a few paper towels to cover your wheels and bike frame from possible lube spillage. Now comes the fun part. Slowly spin the pedals backwards while dripping lube onto the top of the chain. Make sure the drops are landing on the center of the chain links and not the side of the chain. Keep spinning the pedals until the chain looks nice and shiny, then put the lube away.

Now take your wad of paper towels and give the chain a quick wipe-down. This removes all the excess lube, which will do nothing for you but attract dirt. Now, you're all ready to go ride.
