Advantage of Running a Chain Guide for Freeride Mountain Bikers

My new personal favorite add on to my mountain bike is the E-13 Chain Guide. This article discusses my experiences with the Chain Guide.

I raced several races last year in 2020 with the 2 ring plus bash guard combo and no big surprise the chain flying off equals catastrophic race results.

Some things to note when purchasing the Chain Guide. My Cannondale Gemini 2000 has an E-type derailleur and the stock E-13 package doesn't include the correct adapter, so you must order it as well.

I am by no means a professional bike mechanic, however I am a pretty good home bike mechanic. The instructions aren't bad, but like any project for the first time, you can pretty much double or triple the time it will take you to install it vs. a shop. I took me several hours to get it all dialed in. I found the hardest part following the instructions advice on setting up the spacers correctly. I measured out everything perfectly to their specs, maybe to perfectly since there was a little friction when pedaling so I had to pull everything apart and pull one spacer. After that it has worked flawlessly with no adjustment required since its initial installation. That was hundreds of hard riding miles ago in which I have raced on it and beat the heck out of it on our local Santa Barbara trails like Tunnel, Jesusita, Romero and Cold Springs and also some other southern California trails including Backbone and San Juan Capistrano. Those are the local trails, I also rode it in Tahoe at Northstar.

It is important to note that each bike design has its own set of challenges as far as installation is concerned. I volunteered to install the same guide on a friend's Turner Highline which didn't go quite as smooth. Part of the reason being I was rushed for time as we were going on a big ride early the next morning and I didn't get the bike till late at night, but the primary reason being his front derailleur shifting is very touchy, and to get it perfect it required 3 attempts with the spacers while mine only took 2. I ran out of time for the 3rd spacer attempt, so I just returned it stock until we got back from our trip. I think if it is your own bike and you occassionally adjust your own derailleurs you would have an edge, but if you have any doubts, just have your local shop install it, how much could it really cost?

I think when all was said and done, I probably had $150 invested into the upgrade, but it was worth every penny, and both my recreational and race riding has truly benefited from the chain staying on the ring where it belongs.
