Explaining Incontinence to Your Grandkids

Kids sometimes have a hard time understanding why grandma or grandpa has to stop playing with them and go to the bathroom so often. This article explains how to help kids understand grandma or grandpa's incontinence problem.

Kids love to hang out with their grandparents, and grandparents try their best to keep up, but it can be a challenge for grandparents who have bladder control problems and urinary incontinence. As a physician, I've had patients tell me their grandkids wonder why "grandmommy" or "granddaddy" has to go to the bathroom so often when they're together, and they're not sure how to explain bladder control problems to them. After all, kids have a hard time grasping concepts like "bladder" and "urinary incontinence." What's the best way to explain urinary incontinence to kids so they understand why grandparents have to take frequent bathroom breaks?

Explaining Bladder Control and Urinary Incontinence Problems to Kids

When explaining incontinence to kids, relate it to concepts they can easily understand. For a young child, tell them everyone has a "balloon" inside their tummy that holds water - the bladder. If the balloon fills up with too much water, it leaks unless you go to the bathroom and empty it. Grandma or grandpa has a "balloon" that gets full faster than theirs does, and they have to empty it more often.

Explain to them that grandma or grandpa feels better when they can sneak away to a bathroom to empty their "balloon" so they can again enjoy spending time with them again. Remind kids of how they feel when their own "balloon" is full and how much better it feels when they empty it. Young kids can relate to the concept of the bladder being a balloon and are usually satisfied with this explanation.

Helping Older Kids Understand Urinary Incontinence

For kids who are a little older, explaining grandma's or grandpa's need to find a bathroom is a chance to show them how their body works - and teach them a little science at the same time. Show them a diagram of the kidneys and bladder and explain how they work in simple terms.

Point to the kidneys and explain that they remove things from the blood that the body no longer needs. Show them how urine travels from the kidneys to the bladder through two long tubes (the ureters). Point to the bladder on the diagram. Explain that it's a balloon-like structure that stores urine until it's ready to be released. Then show them how urine flows out of the balloon through a tube. (the urethra) to the outside world. It's a good chance to help kids understand more about their own body as well as why grandma and grandpa have to slip away to a bathroom more often.

The Bottom Line?

It's a touchy subject, but one that even young kids can relate to -- especially when you liken the bladder to something simple like a balloon. Older kids can benefit from seeing a diagram of the urinary tract that you can find online with a simple explanation on how it works.
