Dollhouse Drum Set

This drum set is made from tin cans!

Supplies:
Cans
Can lids
Wire
Nail and hammer or drill
Paint, cloth, or decorative paper (all optional)

Good luck finding a drum set for a Barbie or Ken doll; they can be difficult or impossible to locate. That's one of the great things about making your own dollhouse stuff. You can create rugs, wall pictures, furniture, and more, by using common things. And wait until you see a homemade drum set. Made from cans and lids, the drum set is rudimentary yet fun. Empty cans, and their lids, become drums and cymbals when you set them up for a Barbie or other dollhouse. It's really not hard to make the set; the most challenging part is twisting some wire.

It can be helpful to look at pictures of drum sets to get an idea of the various sizes of the drums, and their placement in the group, as well as the look and arrangement of the cymbals. Start out by cleaning some cans, which have their lids removed, and clean the lids, too. With everything dry, you can begin making the miniature drum set.

You'll need stands for the drums and cymbals and they can be made from twisted wire. At a hardware store, look for wire that is stiff yet easy enough to twist. It doesn't take real stiff wire to hold up an empty can.

There are various ways to prepare the cans and cymbals to create the drum set. Remove the labels of the cans, cover them with cloth or decorative paper, or even remove the labels and paint the cans - and lids.

Cut wires and twist them to make stands for the drums and cymbals. To make the legs, bend each of three individual wires a couple of inches. Then, twist the three wires together. Continue twisting them to create a "pole", on which a piece can stand.

A large, short, round can is a good choice for the bass drum. Tomato paste, or similar cans, make a nice low and middle tom-tom drum. Use a peach, pear, or similar can to make a floor tom-tom.

To create cymbals, poke a hole in the middle of a can lid, put two such lids on a wire, and you've created cymbals. No matter what you're making, insert the wire into the can, either in the lid, or elsewhere, depending on the piece.

The miniature drum set is a wonderful addition to a dollhouse or can just be set on a shelf for display. It's a great way to use up cans that would otherwise go in the trash and a cool way to create something new for your home - or Barbie's.
