Baseball Gloves - Buying Guide

Each position on the field is analyzed to help the competitive baseball player make a good decision when buying a baseball glove.

The first position is outfield. The same type of glove can be used for all positions in the outfield because the style of play is not that much different between Left, right and centerfield. Right fielders may choose a slightly larger glove at the professional level because the player at this position usually has the strongest arm which wouldn't force them to make a quick transfer anyway, but would rather allow them to wind up and make a powerful throw. Either way a traditional outfielder's glove should be at least 12.5 inches and no more than 14 inches. Some of the popular gloves out right now are the Trapeze Rawlings edition which usually retails for $159.99. This is my favorite brand although you should make a decision on what glove feels most comfortable for your liking. Remember just because a professional uses a certain glove doesn't mean it's going to be best for you. This is a common mistake made by many young ballplayers. The outfielder's glove is made for a long reach not necessarily a quick transfer so a bigger mitt is usually the best option.

Next I will go over the infield positions. Third basemen such as David Wright and A-Rod use bigger mitts than any other player in the infield besides first base and catcher which are a different story. Third basemen's mitts usually are anywhere from 11.5 to 12.5 inches. Most professional third basemen use 11.75. Professionals will usually use the smallest glove possible for the quick transfer considering they usually have quick enough hands to scoop up anything without the bigger mitt. Third basemen have to be quick but because of their strong arms and the fact that the ball is hit to them very quickly give them extra time to step and throw. The bigger glove allows the fielder to reach down the line and into the hole in order to cut off would be singles and doubles.

Middle infielders glove sizes range from 11 inches to 11.75. I have seen players such as Tony Graffanino use 10.75 inch gloves, however I don't recommend this. I would recommend an 11.5 inch glove. This is used by most shortstops including Jeter and Jose Reyes. For second baseman I would also recommend an 11.5 but and 11.25 or 11 would work considering there is less range to cover. A second basemen also needs a smaller glove because of the quick release on double plays. This transfer is much more difficult for second baseman so a smaller glove would be preferred. The smaller glove also allows for quick shovel passes using only the glove on plays running in. Overall glove size for middle infielders is pretty similar depending on your skill set.

The catcher and first baseman position are similar in that both types of gloves are completely different from the others. That may take a minute to sink in. Catchers mitt's are by far the most difficult to break in. However, a good one should last you a long time. The average professional size for a catcher's mitt is about 33 inches. It is also important to think of factors such as color of the mitt and what color mitt would make it easiest for the pitcher to locate the target. When talking about catcher's mitts it's all about comfort. Other positions you may want a mitt that looks fancy but catching is no joke and your body and hands will take abuse if you are not prepared with proper equipment.

First basemen's mitts usually size at around 12.5 or 13 inches, however they also include a huge webbed area for scooping ability. When choosing a first basemen's mitt you must not forget that you will be forced to catch ground balls as well. Therefore don't just focus on receiving the throws. Scooping and receiving is important but a gold glove first basemen should have hands comparable to a third basemen which makes fielding a groundball just as important.

Finally I will discuss pitchers. If you are a pitcher don't look too much into a glove because fielding is obviously not you first priority. When thinking of buying a pitchers glove make sure the glove is capable of fielding properly. However, you also don't want the glove to be a distraction. A pitchers glove is usually the size of a middle infielder's glove around 11.25 to 11.5 inches. You want the glove to be smaller making sure it doesn't disrupt the fluid pitching motion. Otherwise this topic is of little significance.
