Are We Going Too Far With Fashion for Young Girls?
Go to your local kids clothing store, not just a fancy one, somewhere like Target or Wal-Mart and see what they have on sale for girls sizes 4 and up.
Sure, you might find a few shirts that are five bucks or so, folded and put towards the back. It's what you find hanging up facing the customers as they walk by that catches your attention. You've got gold trimmed jeans, pearl outlined pockets on jeans, camouflage sparkly died jeans, etc. For shirts you have little camisoles, half shirts, spaghetti straps, short mini skirts, and even shirts with sayings like "everyone loves a blue eyed girl." Keep in mind we are still talking about preschoolers here.
Don't stop at just the style of the clothing, look at the price tags. I'm paying the same amount for a pair of jeans for my daughters, as I would for myself. Come on, $30.00 for a pair of jeans in a toddler size 4? Just because they have a few specks of glitter on them? WOW.
The point I'm getting at here isn't the price or the style of the jeans, but it's the fact that we are pushing our young children to be way too adult, way too soon. Do we really need them to grow up that fast? Not me, I want my children to be young at heart, mind and soul. I want to explore the world with them. I want to learn more from my children on a daily basis than I can reading a newspaper. It's fun and entertaining to me.
So, what do I teach my children to keep them from growing up too fast? Take time to stop and live life. Teach kids that more is not necessary; bring them back down to the basics. You remember... plain colored jeans and t-shirts? Ya, those. Kids don't know anything is different from what they have until you teach it to them. If you teach them that pretty is "in" at 3 or 4 years old, then that's the mindset they will have. If you teach them that learning good manners, keeping a neat appearance (no matter what you are wearing), and doing well in school is "in," then that's the mind set they will have... and that's what I want. I definitely don't want my children to believe looks are everything. Although, they do mean something, it's just not EVERYTHING.
So where will you catch me shopping at? The clearance rack (way in the back) in Wal-mart or Target.
