Researchers Find Stressed Women More Likely to Conceive a Girl
British researchers discover that women who experience before or during conception are more likley to have baby girls.
In what has to be one of the oddest studies of late, researchers in Britain have found that women who endure more than normal amounts of stress during the time in which they get pregnant are more likely to have a girl than a boy baby. They believe it has to do with the amount of cortisol, the so-called stress hormone that women produce when under stress condition. They have published their results in the journal, American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
The study, conducted by researchers at Oxford University's Department of Public Health, entailed asking 338 volunteer women who were trying to get pregnant to keep detailed diaries during the time leading up to conception, which included intimate details about their sexual proclivities. In addition, each of the women were asked to complete questionnaires about how stressed they felt. Also, each women submitted to a blood test on the sixth day of their menstrual cycles.
Eventually, 207 of the women became pregnant giving birth to 58 boys and 72 girls (the remaining 77 either aborted their babies or lost them before or during birth). The study team noted the high percent of girls and chalked figured that into their calculations.
In analyzing the data, the group found that virtually all of the women that gave birth to girls also had higher than normal levels of cortisol in their bloodstream, and indication that they were experiencing abnormal amounts of stress when trying to conceive. Though, the team did not publish the details of what was causing the stress. Also, they acknowledge that simply subjecting themselves to such a study may have been a contributing factor.
Also noteworthy was the fact that the team also measured levels of the enzyme alpha-amylase, better known as adrenaline which is sometimes called the "fight or flight" hormone by anthropologists due to it being linked to activity that in early history served to help human beings survive inhospitable environments. The team found that adrenaline levels were abnormally high for the women who conceived girls as well.
The findings are a continuation of a previous study that found that women who experience during the time they are trying to get pregnant are less prone to achieving what they are after, or in other words, overstressing makes it harder to conceive. This adds to the research that also suggests that women who are overly stressed during pregnancy tend to have more problems that those that are more relaxed.
In all, the researchers found that overly stressed women are up to 75% more likely to have a girl.
