First Road Trip with My Baby

Lessons I learned while taking my sweet baby girl for her first adventure to Charleston, South Carolina.

Tomorrow I will pack up the car with enough gear for a small army and head out into the world with my six month old baby. We have never ventured out of the city and she hates the car seat. It should be interesting to say the least. To put it bluntly, I am terrified. We are only going five hours away, but I do not know how long she will make it.

This is my plan. We will leave the house at nine o'clock in the morning right as her first nap is due to begin. If everything goes according to plan we should hit the next big city with a beautiful rest area by the time she wakes up. We will stop there to eat and play on our blanket in the grass. I will also eat the food I have packed for myself and caffeine up. Then, we will proceed for however long we can make it. Hopefully we can make it an hour or two before stopping to play again. At hour three we will then stop again to eat and play. Our next true meal with food should be at our destination if we are lucky. My hope is that we can make the five hour drive in seven hours. We should miss rush hour, and move the whole time.

I have been asking everyone I know for advice and how their trips went. More than advice I have gotten the "it's not big deal, piece of cake." They also said their baby got fussy about half an hour before they arrived...I will tell her our trip is longer so this will not happen. I hope they are right, and if they are not I will demand advice from now on not words of encouragement.

My secret arsenal includes her mirror, yummy teething cookies, and a Jack Johnson CD. I also have her favorite blanket and toys to play with. My hope is that since she loves to be outside she will like the playtime at the rest stops. I also have her favorite food of sweet potatoes, her favorite bongo drum, a bottle warmer for the car, and Grandma. If need be I am willing to stop every hour to play and take our time on the road. If things should go horribly wrong...I have bought ear plugs.

I am extremely nervous about this trip. I would have to say though that I am more nervous about coming home than going. My biggest fear is that over halfway to our destination things will go completely wrong. We would obviously have to press forward to get there shortly, and then have to make the horrible journey home. Wish us luck...I think I am going to need it.

Part II

We did it! It was not easy, but we managed to make it there and back in relatively one piece. It took us eight hours going and six and a half coming back. However, surprisingly my sanity stayed intact. She did so wonderful, and was far more resilient than I imagined. She really did sleep most the time, and I learned so many things for the next time.

First, stay on their schedule, but push it a little. Going down we stopped a couple time just because I felt bad for her being in her seat. We really didn't need to. On the way back we stopped when she got fussy or when we had pushed the three hours between meals to the max. This made the trip back much swifter. She was much more resilient than I thought and she really didn't fight the car seat too much.

McDonalds is a great place to stop. It was perfect. We could stop there and they had plenty of room and high chairs. The first time we stopped at McDonalds I put her in their highchair to eat. (It was a great highchair not one of those plain wooden ones. Theirs had a tray and everything.) I was able to get a great cup of coffee while I let her play some out of her chair after her feeding. No one bothered us about being in the way or taking too long, and she had a blast watching the people. We stopped at McDonalds a couple other times, and each time was just as great. I highly recommend stopping there; they were so travel and kid friendly.

We also took advantage of the beautiful welcome centers. I took a blanket with us and we sat and played in the grass for a little bit. She loved playing outside, and it was a nice break. Be sure to pack some toys for this time and some snacks and drink for you.

The most important thing I learned was to take my time. I didn't stress about when we would get there, and just went with the flow. That is the best thing you can do. While it was not the most fun thing I have ever done it was not the worst either. I am relieved to have made it home, and I am so proud of my baby girl. I will feel much better in the future about car trips, and I will be far more prepared for the stresses of it. At the end of it all I would even venture to say that my little girl had a blast seeing the world for the first time. Congrats to my baby for her first adventure!ay that my little girl had a blast seeing the world for the first time. Congrats to my baby for her first adventure!
