Make Catnip Mice Using Old Baby Socks

Make do-it-yourself cat toys using baby socks and a little bit of creativity. In minutes you'll have an adorable catnip treat for kitty using tiny socks and a few craft staples.

With a house filled with children and animals, I shouldn't be surprised at how often I still find single baby socks in odd places. Those tiny socks are so cute and tiny, but without a matched pair I can't even donate them, and it seems a shame to simply throw them out. I figured out a wonderful solution that keeps everyone happy: homemade cat toys using baby socks, a tiny bit of sewing and a little creativity.

Here's what you'll need:

* One baby sock (the kind with a small cuff work best)
* 1 jingle bell
* Leather cording, about 6" in length
* Quilt batting or pillow stuffing, enough to fill the sock
* Loose catnip
* Needle and thread

Optional: Extra thread for sewing a face design. I've also added a bit of raffia for the whiskers on the cat toy in this picture.

Step 1: Tie the leather cord onto the jingle bell. The bell goes inside the sock and will also keep the leather cord, which becomes the mouse's tail, from being pulled out by eager kitties. If you're using a larger bell, you can also use leather strips or leather shoelaces to make the tail. As long as it fits through the loop at the top of the bell and fits inside the sock, it should work.

Step 2: Surround the bell with a few strips of quilt batting or pillow fluff and stuff it inside the baby sock. Here's where having a roll-down sock or one with a cuff comes in handy: by tucking it inside the sock, rather than turning the cuff down as it would normally be worn, the sock cuff helps keep the stuffing and loose catnip from working its way out once the kitty starts playing.

Note: if you're going to sew a face on your cat toy, it's best to do it before you stuff it, but you can really do it at any time before you sew it shut. Sometimes when sewing faces it helps to work some batting into the front to help give it extra shape.

Step 3: Add catnip. Be generous with it, as it will work through the batting as your cat plays with it.

Step 4: Sew your cat toy shut around the "tail", making sure to tuck in any loose stuffing.

If you're planning on adding decorations to your toys, don't use anything that can be torn off (like buttons or yarn) that could be ingested by your cat. While catnip is safe to eat if your kitty plays too roughly, other items can cause serious injury and should be avoided.

This is a wonderful project for families to do together, and makes a thoughtful donation to rescue groups or pet shelters. With a little creativity, you can design little sock mice with personalities, and even make little pet stocking stuffers by finding socks in holiday patterns and colors.
